MOSCOW, November 23 (Itar-Tass) -- Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia proposed to introduce the basics of Orthodox culture as a new optional subject in Russian schools.

“After 70 years of atheism we cannot and do not raise the question of teaching the Scripture in schools,” the patriarch said in a meeting with the clergy in Moscow on Wednesday.

At the same time, he believes that the basics of Orthodox culture could be taught in schools as an optional subject if the children and their parents wish so.

This subject “is already taught in the Belgorod and Kursk regions, partly in the Moscow region, and several other regions, and there have been no objections,” Alexy II said.

Is the patriarch missing something here? Orthodox culture already is an optional course in Russian schools. My wife helped write the curriculum.

I don't see where Alexi is offering anything new. My wife wrote the "optional" curriculum over 5 years ago. They had it written as a law, and Putin signed it.

Given that, I have to wonder if he's just proposing a different curriculum.

Gee, imagine being able to opt your child in for such a thing in public school!

In serbia religious education (Ortodox/Catholic/Muslim) is choice with "Civil education". One must choose between two for its children in public schools.

Islam is taught!? Why? Since when do any muslim states teach any Christian religion classes?

IN any case, do you have a reference for the fact that in Serbia Muslim education can be taught? Thanks.

Last night Christian 17-yo boy was cut down with AK-47 from Audi A4 driven by Muslim Albanians.

1. Muslims drive Audi A4s
2. Muslims kill Christians.
3. Noone cares.
4. Muslims can study Islam in Serbia`s state schools.

Isn`t that stupid?

It appears so. Muslims love double standard don't they? It's a deep seated part of their sick psyche - trickery.

I pray fo Dr. Kostunica.
