NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A small, twin-engine plane carrying White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card made an emergency landing in Nashville Saturday after smoke began pouring into the cockpit, officials said.Card and 12 others on board were not injured when the Gulfstream 4 plane bound for Washington landed at the Nashville International Airport around 4 p.m., said Lynne Lowrance, an airport spokeswoman.
"They thought they could be having some trouble with the Avionics instruments but they weren't sure what was causing the smoke," Lowrance said.
The plane left Texas, where Card has been meeting with President Bush at his ranch in Crawford, White House spokesman Ken Lisaius said.
"They made the decision to be safe rather than sorry," Lisaius said. "I was told it was a fairly routine matter."
Lowrance said the 12 other passengers included secret service members.
Bush plans to stay in Texas through Monday, when he departs for a two-day trip focusing on border security that includes stops in Arizona and El Paso, Texas.
Somebody probably forgot to turn off the stove and take the food off the burner.
Glad they are down safe!
Once again, they should have sent the good plane - the Ted Danson plane.
Well, at least it wasn't diverted to Latham, Massachusetts.
I read once somewhere this happened to a pilot,
in that incident it was a exhaust manifold broke/cracked in the enjine compartment and bellowed smoke into the cockpit.
Sorry my typing, it's late...We'll see the the NTSB is on this one if they do one.
"I was told it was a fairly routine matter."
Smoke in the cockpit is NOT routine.
Pilots train for such matters, that is routine.
Smoke in the flight deck is NEVER routine!
Ping
I saw Skip Rutherford there too.
The plane made a "routine" emergency landing?
I would hardly characterize a Gulfstream 4, one of the premiere executive jets in the world with the ability to fly directly from Washington DC to Honolulu, as something akin to a "small, twin-engine plane."
For goodness sake, a Boeing 757, 767, and 777 all have two engines.
Just another example of a lousy journalist who knows nothing about a great deal.
Yep. At least they didn't "hit an air pocket" and enter the dreaded "nose dive"......
Good point, Sky.
I'm sure clinton had a hand in this one...kinda like Ron Brown?????
Thank God everyone is safe.
I bet the DUhers are saying it was an assasination attempt by BushCo.
