Teen in Crash May Have Been Text Messaging

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (AP) -- A 17-year-old likely will face misdemeanor charges after allegedly losing control of his car while text messaging and hitting a bicyclist.

The bicyclist, Jim R. Price of Highlands Ranch, died Friday, two days after the accident.

"We do not believe it was an intentional act, but it was inattentiveness to the roadway," said Lt. Alan Stanton, spokesman for Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

"The investigation showed that he was text-messaging on his cell phone" at the time of the accident, said Stanton.

The driver could face a charge of careless driving resulting in death, Stanton said. Under Colorado law, the teen could face up to a year in prison.

It was the second time Price, an avid cyclist, had been hit by car. He suffered a broken ankle two years ago when he was hit while riding on a bike path. His wife, Shirley, said he had been especially mindful of cars since then.

Shirley Price wasn't angry with the teen. "I feel sorry for the teenager," she said. "It was a stupid mistake," she told the Rocky Mountain News.

Rest assured that bicyclists are far more concerned about motor vehicles than the other way around.

As they should be. You can have flashing red lights and white strobe lights all over your bike, and someone will still run you over. Just like they do when they run into large trains sound ear piercing horns and firetrucks with a dozen lights flashing.

If it had been a few years back the teenager would have been eligible for a medal. Oh! Wait I believe that was for older drivers.......

----I wasn't so forgiving when a drunk killed my husband and baby boy and I NEVER will. It is hard to forgive someone who kills your family through sheer negligence

A sad scenario to say the least.

Who could forgive someone who created such a life's decimation when common sense could have prevented it?

What needs to happen is some of these cagers whose negligence results in death need to be put behind bars for many years.

That might be the "shot across the bow" that knocks some sense in senseless drivers.

Then why risk traveling by bike on roads built for motorized vehicles with this understanding of such a risk in doing so?

Hi Jigsaw John-

A motorist is absolutely at fault when they crash into the sides of trains and firetrucks. That is precisely my point, a portion of drivers are off in La-La Land while they're operating their vehicles.

Most of the bicycle enthusiasts that I see in my area are very good about wearing helmets and bright colors to make them easy to see for attentive motorists.

Less unusual is a messy divorce, which is what was going on here. She managed to supress her glee...

Ahem...

I think somebody has to re-read the drivers manual.

Aside from the road haxards, just think of all those toxic fumes from car exhaust that these health nuts are inhaling deeply into their lungs.

Even smokers don't breathe in their smoke as deep as these bikers and runners do.

And I bet they're rabib anti smoking, to boot

You must be a graduate of "WATTSAMATTA U" in Frostbite Falls Minnesota! ; )

Yes, one of the greatest cartoons ever produced was "Rocky and Bullwinkle"!

Aesop's Fables was another good one.

Hi EGPWS-

"...Why risk traveling by bike on roads built for motorized vehicles with this understanding of such a risk in doing so?..."

You strike me as simply being contrarian on this thread. The kid doing the text messaging while driving could have just as easily hit a pedestrian crossing the road or a disabled motorist changing a flat tire. Should they also not be allowed to be there?

Knock it off with the absurd "bicyclists shouldn't be on the road" arguement because it is a sophomoric attitude that is not based in reality. The immature kid was text messaging while driving when he hit a person who had every right to be on the road.

Don't forget Tom Slick, SuperChicken and other serious social observational Ward cartoons.

And don't loose all your money in LOST WAGES (B&C)
