"Islam bans cremation.."
Of course it does. But not cremation by way of C4, or burning jet fuel.

Why is it OK to broadcast at high decibels the sounds of dying animals to those at WACO? Play rock and roll outside the residence of Noriega? Not OK to taunt an enemy? America is weak, and showing it to the enemy. I remember the British in the 18th century, maligning the militias that brought us freedom. All because we fought "unfairly". Now we are like those redcoats, playing fair and watching as our soldiers die. War is hell, the only rules are those that the winner writes.

"The last violent anti-American protests in Afghanistan were in May over a report by Newsweek _ later retracted _ that U.S. soldiers at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility abused Islam's holy book, the Quran."
It should read erroneous report by Newsweek.
BTW, the punishment should be something like an all expense paid week at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, ya know Sin City where it is impossible to find 72 virgins. ;)

If it is nonjudicial punishment, the CO can find that there was no offense. If it is a court marshal, they could be fined a carton of cigarettes for any offense.
But the bottom line is that the US appears to be putting these guys on the line for no reason except a clamor in the press. Their immediate supervisor it the chain could stop this as well as their commanding general. All that is required is the chonies on their part. Time will tell the tale.

The Geneva Convention forbids the burning of combatants except for hygienic purposes. Are the Taliban uniformed soldiers? If not, then they aren't covered by the Geneva Convention anyways.

If the enemy doesn't laugh at the obsequiousness of the United States in the war...they have no sense of humor.
They burn, rape, behead, blow to smithereens CIVILIANS with impunity...and our response is follow the Geneva Convention and kiss their fannies.
Disgusting.

The video footage threatens to undermine public support for the war against a stubborn insurgencyNot at my house.
These "insurgents" are nothing but rabid dogs who hide behind women and children and would kill your children if they could. They burned our people alive - these were dead stinking bodies that were burned. And we are supposed to "play well with others"?? The touchy feely generals running this war are being led by the nose by the media.

...but they will not be charged with crimes because their actions were motivated by hygienic concerns, the military said Saturday. Then why on Earth are they facing ANY kind of "disciplinary action"?
WTF?
To: wyattearp
I had previously read it was for hygienic purposes. The bodies were bloated and rotting and smelled. And that was BEFORE they were killed! Seriously, I think if these guys are punished, it will just be to appease the media, which is just plain stupid.

Just what did they do with all of the bodies of dead muslims in Malaysia as a result of the tsunami?

That's right. Just throw the Geneva convention guidlines out the window. Lets do the same to the Islamic extremists as they do to us. Let's throw any sense of morality out the window too.Oh spare me your touchy feely emotion-driven morality. Where does it say rabid cowardly dogs are covered under the Geneva Convention? Or did you forget your sarc tag?
BTW, welcome to FR (11/24/05)

...reprimanded for using loudspeakers to taunt Taliban rebels believed to be lingering in a nearby village after a clash with the troops. officially reprimanded for showing a lack of cultural and religious understanding...
These two statements don't jibe.
If they lacked cultulral understanding (just typing the words makes me ill) then what were they using as taunts to the remaining rebels while burning the bodies?
