Kilgour will add his boot
Ex-Liberal Independent MP will help vote Grits out on Monday
By DOUG BEAZLEY, EDMONTON SUN
November 25, 2005
It'll be the last act of David Kilgour's long and rocky life in Canadian politics: voting with the Opposition to kick his former Liberal colleagues out of office.
"This government has behaved atrociously for the last several months. It really had forfeited all right to the confidence of the Canadian people," the Mill Woods-Beaumont independent MP and 26-year veteran of federal politics told the Sun yesterday.
"After all is said and done, it's up to the people - and I'm not going to tell them how they should vote. But I will be voting with the non-confidence motion (on Monday)."
The Conservatives, Bloc Quebecois and New Democrats have agreed to support a Tory non-confidence motion against the Liberals.
The motion will force Prime Minister Paul Martin to call an election. It's expected the vote will be on Jan. 23.
Kilgour said the sponsorship scandal - which saw millions of taxpayer dollars ripped off from a Liberal government program that was supposed to woo soft Quebec nationalists into the federalist fold - is a big reason why he's voting to gas the Martin government. But it's not the only one.
"The phrase is 'abuse of office,' " he said. "I just got back from Bosnia-Herzegovina, where Canadian prosecutors are working on abuse-of-office cases. It's a criminal offence there, but not here.
"I was a prosecutor for 10 years, and I can tell you - when someone breaks the law, you get the police after them and you prosecute.
"You don't call some inquiry with a judge who can't make binding recommendations and let it turn into a three-ring circus."
Kilgour wouldn't say who he thought should have been hauled off in handcuffs - "because we'd both be sued for libel." But he did suggest that Martin's reaction to Adscam sacrificed the interests of justice in order to deliver political scalps to a revenge-hungry public.
"No one is going to be punished for abuse of office, not in a thousand years," he said. "It'll all be swept under the rug.
Kilgour - who handled Asia-Pacific, Latin American and African issues while in the Chretien outer cabinet - said he's also fed up with the Martin government's limp response to international crises like the war in Sudan.
Last spring, Kilgour exploited his key position as an independent MP in a minority Parliament to pressure Martin into sending a military mission to the Sudanese region of Darfur.
Kilgour told media this month that, out of 100 Canadian advisers promised, only three have been sent to Darfur.
"Martin ended up doing nothing substantive at all," he said. "The prime minister will always agree with the last person he spoke to.
"Everything is his 'absolute priority,' but in the end he stands for nothing."
He also attacked Martin for his so-called "whistleblower" bill, C-11, which Kilgour said does nothing to protect public servants who speak out against government corruption.
He said the bill forces whistleblowing public servants to rely on a government tribunal to protect them - and removes their right to appeal to the courts.
See, this is why the people shouldn't be allowed to participate in politics: they don't know what's good for them. We all know that libs never lie, cheat, steal or do anything for money. They're only concerned with the welfare of the little guy and care more about him than anyone else.
Canada needs more reforms to make it more like the utopia of France and Bush needs to be impeached. Only then will we have a true paradise on earth.
(/sarcasm)
Someone with the guts of Kilgour is needed down here. I refuse to believe there isn't a single Democrat member of our Congress who isn't brave enough to challenge his party's kow-towing to the kook fringe.
Kilgour is no better. He had the oportunity to bring down the government last spring, but he, like the bimbo political whore Stronach, took the bribe instead.
Now he's talking like he's doing an honorable thing, when he knows it will happen no matter how he votes. Good riddance Martin, liberals, and you too Kilgour, nobody is going to re-elect a fence sitter like you either. Not that it matters, you will continue to draw a fat pension which you voted to accept while others voted to bring under control.
I suspect we will see a conservative sweep (again) across the prairies, but it doesn't matter, Usually it's all decided before Western Canadians vote.
Maybe this time there will be enough disgust in Ontario, so don't give up! Every seat matters! With GM closing down, maybe those idiotic liberals in the east will wake up and realize that those 30,000 jobs are just a taste of what is to come under the Liberal Kyoto accord. Martin is out promising 16 billion in promises already, He will bankrupt the treasury before those laid-off people wake and realize there will be no money for unemployment extentions for them!
Frankly this is the LAST CHANCE for Ontario from my perspective. IF they vote in ANOTHER CLEARLY CORRUPT LIBERAL GOVERNMENT AGAIN, then the WEST MUST SEPARATE. We are from two different planets. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND a mindset like Ontario Liberals have. They must LIKE being robbed. Because they reward their pick pockets everytime. Utter FOOLS.
He voted with the Conservatives to bring down the government last spring...
