I do not think we as a society should in any way sanction or condone "prison rape".
There should be no such thing as "prison rape", since government prisons supposedly controll every aspect of the prisoners existance.
Think about it for just a moment.
I think we need, as a society, to stand up and demand criminal punishments fit the crimes, and not expect or assume that convicted criminals will actually meet out the justice we, as a supposedly civilized society, have failed to administer.
I can understand the position, although I do not agree with it, of people who abhor the death penalty.
What I do not understand is the position of people who think that the punishment of convicted criminals should be administered by other convicted criminals.
If we want pedophiles and rapists to suffer the same degradations they inflicted on their victims, let us sentence them to that,or death, and be done with it.
No, prison should not be a comfortable "time out", it is a societal punishment, not "corrective action".
And I am all for making it a "thing" widely known to be avoided at all cost.
But I think it wrong to expect the imprisoned dregs of our society to have a finer sense of moral justice than do we, who claim to be appalled at their crimes.

I agree. There should be no prison rape. Prisons are pits of ongoing crime, gang activity and drugs. IMO:

1. Prisons should be run lean and mean - prisoners should produce all they eat, wear, and sleep on.

2. Work all day should be mandatory.

3. Consult that AZ prison guy about meals and accomodations. And pink underwear.

4. No coffee, no cigarettes, no TV, no movies.

I've always wondered - how do prisoners get drugs? It must be "bad" correction officers. Weed them out.

Of course you are right. There should be no such thing as prison rape or, for that matter, any other crime. The sad facts are, though, that there is crime and to a large degree we have failed to control it. I'll leave that issue and go on to a more relevant one - sentencing and justice.

The truth is that we do NOT extract justice in our system. The truth is that we have created a criminal finishing school in our prisons. The truth is that criminals quite often do NOT get what they deserve. Not that I'm too Biblical, but punishment that fits the crime is the only measure of justice I want and I'm not alone. When people are denied justice and criminals do not fear authority, bad things get worse. This freak is but one example.

In numerous examples across history and in the old West, justice given through vigilante action was absolutely necessary because civil authority was for all practical purposes nonexistent. Todays criminal code no longer sentences based on established penalties to fit the crime - today, we consider the circumstances of the criminal. Until our 'justice' system renders fitting sentences and criminals actually fear punishment more than they relish the crimes, then I'll take whatever justice is met out to them - wherever it comes from.
