Allowing concealed guns a bad idea

I am a police officer with the Racine Police Department and a part-time police officer for another community in Racine County. This is strictly my opinion and I am not speaking on behalf of the communities or law enforcement agencies that employ me.

The Wisconsin law against carrying a concealed firearm has worked effectively for over 130 years. Deciding to pass a concealed carry law in Wisconsin that will allow almost every adult to carry a concealed firearm is a potentially dangerous decision.

Carrying a concealed firearm and deciding to shoot another human being is different from what is perceived on television, in the movies or while playing a video game. Allowing Wisconsin residents to carry concealed firearms may not reduce crime. If anything, crime may increase and there will be, without a doubt, more firearms in our homes and on our streets.

I strongly support the ability for people to defend themselves, but I don’t believe that carrying a concealed firearm is the only way to accomplish this. There are a lot of responsibilities that come with carrying a concealed firearm and being able to effectively use it against someone in their self-defense or in the defense of another human being.

I agree that retired law enforcement professionals should be permitted to carry a concealed firearm as long as they follow state and federal laws and those policies presented to them by their former law enforcement agencies.

I believe that there is no credible evidence that carrying a concealed firearm reduces crime and that passing a concealed carry law in Wisconsin will do more harm than good.

The police do NOT exist to PREVENT crime - they exist to clean up the mess and bring the criminal to justice after the crime has been committed.

1. Do criminals obey the guns laws that are on the books?

2. Is it the local police department's job to prevent crime or respond to crime?

I absolutely agree. Anyone carrying a gun should be required to carry it UNCONCEALED.

I know it would make a lot of bar scenes much quieter.

            Buy what standard have you determine that the ban against weapons of self-defense has worked efficiency?

            How is allowing a law abiding person a danger to anyone? And if you are a police officer, then you know that criminals carry concealed weapons. When was the last time that you arrested a housewife who was carrying a concealed weapon?

Should we consider you a danger because you have a concealed weapon on your person?  Why should I trust you more than I trust a civilian?

There is a video at www.big-boys.com that shows some cops holding a subject on the ground on his stomach, just having had the cuffs snapped on. A big burly cop has his knee in the guy's back. Into the picture walks this female cop with her gun drawn, pointed somewhat waveringly and half-heartedly in the direction of the suspect on the ground as she approaches.

And her gun goes off, just missing the guys head. He goes a little nuts (understandably), while she tries to figure out if she should put her weapon back in her holster...

This is not meant as a slam on women...just on poorly trained cops. She happened to be a good example of your point, exactly!

Simply another elitist public official who feels the public at large is simply too stupid to protect themselves with a firearm and he knows best for us.

Maybe he should try doing some research on the various hundreds of studies that basically say the exact opposite of this pablum he's spouting.

Here in NC we have cc. I just made arrangements today for me, my wife, and my two daughters (ages 23 and 21) to take a course for cc. I want to be able to buy a gun at a show without a permit each time, and my wife now works, after years of staying home with the daughters. My girls were both left NICE handguns as an inheritance by their grandfather, and they are often out alone, so it makes sense that if they want to carry, they should be able.

I pray we will never need to use them, but then again, I don't want anyone to HAVE to use a weapon on another person.
