Toll collectors on the Golden Gate Bridge have been issued bullet-resistant vests in the wake of an April robbery and shooting that seriously wounded a veteran bridge worker.
Bridge district spokeswoman Mary Currie said Tuesday that the 42 full- and part-time toll takers had been given vests last week after bridge managers, the collectors and union officials brainstormed about what could be done to improve security at the toll plaza. The 58-year-old toll collector who was wounded in the shooting returned to work last month, Currie said.
She underwent surgery after being shot in the neck and chest by 42-year-old Marcellus Cooksey of San Francisco after he drove up in a stolen SUV and demanded money. He shot the worker even though she handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. Cooksey, later found to be on probation and wanted on traffic warrants, was shot in the leg by a bridge security guard after his SUV stalled and he tried to flee on foot.
He has pleaded no contest to two counts of attempted murder, one count of robbery, and stolen vehicle and gun charges.

They made their bed let them lie in it.
The SUV was the catalyst for this incident.
SF is a quagmire. We must pull out.
They better be isssuing bullet-proof turtlenecks.
1. Close all of the tollbooths in America.
2. Raise the gasoline tax by a few pennies to recoup the lost revenue.
3. Line up all the unemployed tollbooth workers along the southern border to keep out illegal immigrants.
I wonder what kind of nickname he'll end up with in prison?
Here the Tollway Officials steal the money themselves before any robbery can occur. John 'Quarters' Boyle
And then, after they get out of prison Mayor Daley puts them on the City of Chicago payroll, and in management no less!
Actually, they should arm them too....like in NYC
Guess why not - I once knew a person who was familiar with those jobs on the Golden Gate; he told me that the vast majority of the toll-takers are patronage appointments from the politicians, at most impressive salaries...
"Raise the gasoline tax by a few pennies to recoup the lost revenue."
How about NO!!! on raising taxes???
I hope I don't live in a vacuum but why raise taxes when housing values and property taxes are going up accordingly?
Sounds to me like pretty much everywhere in the USA.
This is what pisses me off. here in Ca Ahnold wants to float more bond issues to "fix stuff" and no one, not McClintock, Drier or any "conservative" voice asks where is/has all this new property tax revenue been going if not to "fix things"?
"SF is a quagmire. We must pull out."
Good point, really.
You never here cries of "quagmire" for any of the usual US hellhole cities either. Instead, its always "we need to do more".
"and no one ... asks where is/has all this new property tax revenue been going if not to "fix things"?"
Weren't you guys in debt up to your ear lobes after Gray Davis?
Can civilians purchase bullet proof vests?
YEP...Look up your nearby police supply store.
That vest would have been a lot of help with that injury.
For protection against invaders entrepreneurs from Oakland and Richmond?
Yes, but that was before the run up in housing values/increase in prop taxes.
Alot of new money in the state coffers is going somewhere and with this legislature we have now it certainly isn't going to pay bills.
Calif bonds are further sliding into "junk" status and Ahnold wants to float even more w/o a word mentioned re: the windfall property tax revenue. Not a word.
