Scalia Gives Franken Some Air (chides Franken like a schoolboy over rude & clumsy questions)
NY Post ^ | November 23, 2005 | Richard Johnson

AL Franken found out the hard way not to mess with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who chided Franken as if he were a delinquent schoolboy at Time Warner Center on Monday night…

When Pearlstine opened the floor for Q&A, Franken stood up in the back row and started talking about "judicial demeanor" and asking "hypothetically" about whether a judge should recuse himself if he had gone duck-hunting or flown in a private jet with a party in a case before his court.

Franken was clumsily referring to the fact that Scalia had gone hunting and flying with Dick Cheney before the 2000 election.

First, Scalia lectured Franken, "Demeanor is the wrong word. You mean ethics." Then he explained, "Ethics is governed by tradition. It has never been the case where you recuse because of friendship."

Time Warner chairman Dick Parsons later told PAGE SIX: "Al was not quite ready for prime time." Franken was a "Not Ready for Prime Time Player" on "Saturday Night Live" long before he began hosting a radio show on Air America.

Does Franken have any other talent than being childish?

A long time ago, I posted an article about Franken's sitcom Lateline.

The article said that the show set a record for the lowest rated primetime network television show in the entire history of ratings.

That accomplishment led him to today's position as the star attraction of Air America.

Speaking of that, there was some tv sitcom with Fanken on it with G. Gordon Liddy in a guest appearance. Franken was given a revolver as an award for something (all this was on the show and not real) and was goofing around with it and accidentally discharged it and shot Liddy in the arm (grazing wound). Liddy stomped over and snatched it out of Franken's hands calling him a stupid liberal moron who should NEVER have a gun.

Did you actually see this happen? I cannot imagine folks giving Franken (or anyone else) a LOADED gun on a TV set.

"Nit" vs "Wit". Nit loses.

"Not a very even Battle-of-Wits."

Al came unarmed.

Justice Scalia probably had to use two brain cells.

Justice Scalia probably had to use two brain cells.

Yeah, but one of those two brain cells was egging the other brain cell on... so technically one brain cell was conducting the argument and the other was taunting... :)

"and the poeple of Minnesota will make him their senator." Never going to happen.

The Minnesota I left 12 years ago will elect him in a landslide. Mpls/STP will vote him right in.AWB

It's unbelievable how the libs at work worship him.

It only makes sense if you look at their alternatives. We've got plenty of smart, glib and personable right-wingers out there, but what have the lefties got? Certifiable Loons, dumb actors, antisemites, cynical money grubbers, etc.

The funny thing is, I'll bet the DUmmies are running victory laps over this today, crowing about how Franken got into Scalia's face and "spoke truth to power." They're so cataclysmically stupid that they won't understand just how hard their village idiot got slapped down.

Certainly Franken doesn't realize what happened to him. The Post article goes on later to say:

The confrontation with Scalia didn't seem to weaken Franken's interest in running for the U.S. Senate from Minnesota. Franken discussed his possible candidacy afterward at the cocktail reception overlooking Columbus Circle. "I think I got under his skin a little"...

I think the comics you're remembering, where the bad guys had holes in them, were "Fearless Fosdick", a parody of Dick Tracy.

If even Franken doesn't get what happened to him, there's no way the DUmmies will.

OK!! I am stealing this one! (also your "disjointed rant".) I'm laughing so hard I've started coughing and the cat is looking at me funny.

I thought Stewart Smally was pretty funny. Of course, I was a lot younger and spent a lot of time "under the influence" so...

"One can imagine Franken afterwards, smoking a bone with his Air America buddies, telling them, "Boy, I really told him off!!!"

That reminds me....on my way home yesterday afternoon, before I had a chance to change the radio station, I caught a minute or two of Randi Rhodes. Her caller stated that his son finished serving in Iraq and now wants to re-enlist.
Said Randi, "no,no,no,no,no,no,no, don't let him do it. Go smoke a reefer with him and try to talk him out of it".
