Born on this Day
1804 Franklin Pierce, U.S. President (1853-57); judged by many to be a weak president for failing to take steps to avert the Civil War. Pierce's popularity in the North went down sharply after he came out in favor of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, repealing the Missouri Compromise and reopening the question of the expansion of slavery in the West.

Abandoned by his own party, he was not renominated at the 1856 presidential election, and was replaced by James Buchanan.

1888 Harpo Marx, one of the "Marx Brothers," a group of Vaudeville entertainers who later achieved fame as comedians in the motion picture industry. He was well known by his trademarks: he played the harp, never talked, and frequently used props in sight gags.

On this Day in History 1936 Life magazine made its debut. Founded by influential American publisher Henry Luce, the photojournalism magazine was published weekly until 1972. The photograph on the first cover shows the spillway of the Fort Peck Dam project on the Missouri River in Montana.

1921 President Harding signed the Willis-Campbell Act, also known as the "anti-beer bill," forbidding doctors from helping patient circumvent prohibition laws by prescribing beer or liquor for medicinal purposes.

Good Workers

Read:

During the early years of our marriage, my wife and I attempted to wallpaper our dingy Chicago apartment. We completed the project, but not without a great deal of difficulty. At one point I even had to remove a poorly-hung section of paper and go to the store to buy more. I learned to appreciate someone who could do a job like wallpapering with skill.

I marvel when I see a carpenter make things fit without measuring and remeasuring again and again. I admire the truckdriver who masterfully backs his big rig into a tight space more easily than I do a small trailer on a 16-foot-wide driveway. I take my hat off to the plumber who so easily and good-naturedly installed a water heater in a small, seemingly inaccessible area—especially when I think of all the frustration I experienced when trying to attach a simple water filter.

We read in today's Scripture about the skilled designers and weavers who helped construct the tabernacle. Proverbs 22:29 says that a person who excels in his work "will stand before kings." And Paul wrote, "Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord" (Colossians 3:23).

God is pleased with work done well. He honors good workers, and so should we. —Herb Vander Lugt

Work done well will receive God's "Well done!"
