Many schools in NYC had rifle and shooting clubs, I remember one woman on a NYC radio talk show that she remembered school children actually carrying their guns, in locked cases, to school on the subway.

Lawrence High School, a heavily Jewish school in a VERY liberal area, had a large rifle club until the late 60s. I'm willing to bet many of its former members joined JPFO.
