THE GOVS ARE OFF AS CHUCK TARGETS ELIOT (Schumer Encourages Ally to Run Against Spitzer)
New York Post ^ | November 21, 2005 | FREDRIC U. DICKER

Sen. Charles Schumer is secretly encouraging Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi to challenge Attorney General Eliot Spitzer for the Democratic nomination for governor, insiders have told The Post.

Schumer's backing of the just-re-elected Suozzi — which includes informal advice on strategy and fund-raising — results from a long-standing rivalry with, and a deep personal dislike for, the high-profile Spitzer, Democratic Party insiders say.

Spitzer's political advisers are aware of Schumer's apparent actions.

"It seems pretty clear to us that Schumer is playing 'footsie' with Suozzi," a source close to Spitzer told The Post.

Evidence of Schumer's support includes a decision by his top Long Island fund-raiser, lawyer Howard Fensterman, to begin preparations for an all-out fund-raising effort on Suozzi's behalf.

Fensterman confirmed he was gearing up to help Suozzi but said Schumer wasn't involved.

Meanwhile, Suozzi — who has told friends he's likely to announce his candidacy early next year — has hired Christopher Hahn, Schumer's former Long Island regional director, as his new chief deputy.

A prominent Democratic political operative said Schumer's support for Suozzi was "rooted in a personal rivalry over who is going to be the first Jewish president, over who is a more significant political figure from New York, in Chuck's perception that he was insulted by Spitzer, and in what could be called class rivalry."

He said Schumer was furious when Spitzer announced his campaign for governor while Schumer was still weighing entering the race.

Party insiders also said Schumer, who has strong ties to many leading Wall Street bankers, has also objected to some of Spitzer's aggressive prosecution of investment-banking firms and insurance-industry executives.

Party insiders, meanwhile, contended that Schumer, who has recently emerged as one of the most important Democrats in the Senate, harbors presidential ambitions and feels that Spitzer,

Spitzer cannot be beat. Suozzi is busy turning Nassau county into another borough of new york city - worse perhaps, today there was a police shootout in the street with a team of armed bank robbers in Baldwin, some of them escaped causing all the public schools in the area to go into lockdown. they are still at large.

Those liberals just can't keep it together. So much hatred. I hope our NY Reps can resurrect the shambles and actually try to run a conservative while the libs' heads are spinning.

he stepped into a vacuum that no politician was talking about, but that many "man on the street" people were - the corruption that took place on wall street leading up to the market bubble implosion. very shrewd politically, even though he did very little to help the typical investor, he cemented his "i'll fight for the regular guy against the big shots" image. Note that Schumer tries to have the same populist image - fighting against "big oil" and "big drug companies" - they are like two Clark Kents trying to squeeze into the same phone booth,

in my opinion - Schumer is far worse then Spitzer. he anti-catholic bias against judicial appointments alone puts him in a class of by himself. and his wife is the DOT commissioner in NYC - her management of the roads here stinks.

Actually, for the sake of humankind, I wish Spitzer would stay where he is. I could not support him ever for Gov., but he is doing a really decent job right where he is -exposing fraud. Now if he'd just expose it at the Clinton mansion...

I don't know Spitzer at all, but I can tell you who isn't going to be "the first Jewish President", the Christian-bashing, gun-grabbing, free-enterprise hating, camera-hogging Left-Wing nut. And in case I just described both these guys, I was speaking specifically of Chuckie. His sycophantic assistants and interns must have convinced Schumer that he's a lot more "telegenic" than he appears, if he actually entertains dreams of sitting in the Oval Office.

There is more then a few differances between Spitzer and Chuckie.

Spitzer is far more dangerious though.

He can actually sit down and talk supply side economics when he wants to (I met him and got a lecture about how New York is overtaxed).

And if anyone wants to know, Hillary is not to happy with these 2 fueding, she also does NOT like Spitzer.

He would love to nail her carcass to his mantle and run for the presidency himself in 2012.

Corzine is also in the same line of thought (he also openly hates Shumer comparing him to a monkey who throws feces, and openly hate Hillary, making fun of her at fundraisers).

Tri-state politics is alot more personal then political and alot more about ego and ambition then about ideology.

Everybody stabs everyone in the back.
