Prosecutors Say Pa. Girl Wasn't Kidnapped

LANCASTER, Pa. - A 14-year-old girl whose 18-year-old boyfriend allegedly fatally shot her parents left willingly with him after the slayings and was not kidnapped, prosecutors said in court papers filed Monday.

Kara Borden told detectives she left of her own free will, according to the filing. David Ludwig told detectives the two planned to get married and start a new life together.

Ludwig confessed to the slayings after his arrest and told police where to find the murder weapon in his car, according to court documents released Monday in Indiana.

In court documents filed in Pennsylvania, prosecutors said Kara Borden ran from her home to get into Ludwig's car after the Nov. 13 shootings.

"(Kara) told the defendant that she wanted to stay with him, and they drove west with the intent to 'get as far away as possible, get married, and start a new life,'" Ludwig told detectives, according to the court papers.

District Attorney Donald Totaro said Monday the kidnapping charge against Ludwig, of Lititz, will be dropped at his preliminary hearing next month.

Earlier Monday, Indiana authorities released a search warrant affidavit for the car the couple drove nearly 600 miles from the murder scene in central Pennsylvania to Indiana.

Ludwig told Indiana State Police that a Glock semiautomatic pistol he used to kill Michael and Cathryn Borden was under the driver's front seat of his parents' car, according to the affidavit.

Police seized a .40-caliber Glock pistol, a .223-caliber rifle and several articles of black clothing under a search warrant executed Wednesday. Under a separate search warrant executed Friday, police said they found a .45-caliber Colt pistol, a screwdriver, several maps and two Indiana license plates.

Ludwig told police that there were several guns in the car.

"He certainly did make a statement and cooperated with police," said Hendricks County (Ind.) prosecutor Patricia A. Baldwin. "They basically let him talk is what they did."

Police have said the murder weapon was a .40-caliber handgun.

Ludwig is being held without bail, awaiting a Dec. 16 preliminary hearing on charges that he shot the Bordens in their home in Lititz on Nov. 13. Police allege the shootings occurred after an argument over Ludwig's relationship with Kara Borden.

Police caught up to Ludwig and Borden Nov. 14 after a chase that ended with him crashing the car into a tree in Belleville, Ind.

James Gratton, a public defender representing Ludwig, said he was aware that his client had given a statement to Indiana authorities, but did not know specifically what he told them.

Neither Ludwig nor the girl, who has not been charged, was injured in the crash.

Investigators said previously they were treating Kara Borden as a crime victim but that the investigation was continuing.

In a court filing Friday, Ludwig's attorneys said they wanted investigators to preserve evidence in Ludwig's wallet, such as receipts from their journey, so that surveillance video could be obtained. The video would show that he didn't kidnap the girl, the attorneys said.

Good Post. Kids should not have a free for all to use the Internet, people speaking of a 14 year old like they have the maturity to understand LUST< DEATH<PAIN...

I agree.

Most games are now first person simulators...which are designed to desensitize you. As I understand it, many are developed to help train soldiers and police officers to not hesitate too long when a job must be done.

So we give them to our children so they can "have fun." Although most children don't do this, It just can't be good for them.

Ha! I was wondering how long it would take for somebody to blame this on video games.

That's ridiculous. My two year old understands "pain", and my 7 year old understands "death".

She lied to her parents and said she was spending the night at a girlfriend's house. Perhaps her parents trusted her too much, but they didn't deserve to be killed for caring about her. They were trying to keep him away from her and were killed for it.

I don't know why you are trying to blame the parents. Their older two adult children appear to be wonderful people.

She'll end up being viewed as a "victim" while everyone forgets about the two little kids SHE helped to orphan.

I am not blaming this on video games. I very clearly said that most kids don't kill others. I don't even know if either one of these kids played video games.

My intended point to another poster was only that when you think it through, our kids are being desensitized to violent death. My point is only that in general, this can NOT improve people's lives and interaction with and empathy for others.

We all have free will, even at 14. This girl made many bad choices before this one.

However, if you are honest with yourself, you can see how sometimes we little by little set ourselves, and sometimes our children, up for making very, very horrible decisions.

Yep. Sounds like she had wonderful parents and an excellent upbringing. The only way some can deal with "evil" is to find blame whether it be video games, parents, school systems, etc.

Some kids just go bad. Period.

I'm always curious to learn just where and how these murderers were thinking things would turn out

Me, too! I mean, don't they watch TV? If they do, they should know that they are ALWAYS caught.

What is most interesting to me is what freepers are NOT saying about this. The fact is that both of these kids were from Christian homes, from good parents, who wanted only to raise their children in a manner to shield them from the cesspool of youth culture today.

While I think that is good (we homeschooled ours till they were 14, and wish we had gone further with our oldest), it is a myth to think that you can determine your kids' choices. There is resident evil within them and no amount of religious conditioning is going to get it out. This should be a lesson to those who think that "those people" (the libs, the pervs, the stuck-in-the-sixties loons, and the general fruitcakes we have out there) are raising total losers and they would raise "good kids" if they were just more like us.

When God does miraculously remove the love for death from our kids and replace it with a love for life and a love for the author of life, it is not because we are "better" than the heathen, and it damn sure isn't because we have done a "better job." It is because of a thing called "grace," and by definition neither I nor my children deserve it.

The dead parents showed every sign of having been good, praying, loving parents who wanted to protect their children from the kind of influences that caused their own deaths.

It takes an outside force to remove evil from our hearts, and kids are not coke machines that will produce the "right" products if we can just come up with the correct change. It sure is not a sign that license to crow about what a good job we are doing.

You are actually incorrect. The parents knew of the relationship and went thru all kinds of gymnastics to shut it down, including suspending internet service. She met this guy at a social event for other home schoolers (he was home schooled from a good family, as well). see post 151.

I'm not being critical of the parents at all, but maybe the one thing they might have tried is the two older brothers. A little, "Go have a talk with him, man to man" if you know what I mean.

A little, "Go have a talk with him, man to man" if you know what I mean.

I agree with that approach. In fact, the dad called this kid over to talk with him man to man over the issue. That is when the kid shot and killed him.

I do believe the presence and activity of a male is a good thing. I told my daughter's fiance the following: "I know you will fight. I know you will have some "interesting" fights and will feel like there is no love left. When that happens, if she comes "home to us" we will help her settle down and send her back to her REAL "home," which is with you. If there is another woman, she can come home and stay...... but if you ever hit her, I will either kill you or make you wish you were dead. I am an old man now and I am a Christian, but when it comes to my daughter, I forget all about Jesus and turning the other cheek and I know how to equalize the age thing. I don't think that will ever happen, and I love you like you are my son. But you never hit my daughter, cause the day you do that, she is not FIRST your wife and SECOND my daughter. Then she reverts back to the daughter that I am bound to protect."

He said "I would die for your daughter, and if I ever hit her, someone SHOULD kill me." which, of course, is what any future father in law wants to hear.

If you go along with the guy after he murders your parents, you are agreeing after the fact.

What I'm saying is it's odd how a romantic relationship will utterly destroy the bond with the parents. If anyone else had suggested or even committed the act, she would not have gone willingly.

Because it was her 'lover' it may not have been great, but she could live with it.

What I am saying is a 14 yr old girl had either mental problems or was not supervised well enough.

14 yr olds do not think like adults in any way shape or form...

I agree fully with your post #151...I am 60yrs old now, and have seen all sorts of ranges of behaviors in many different children, all raised in different situations...I have seen kids raised in loving, Christian homes, and most of those kids turned out just fine...but not all of them, there are always those who turn out completely bad...by the same token, I have seen children raised in what I would consider awful homes, and yet by and large most of these children have also turned out just fine...again, there are those who also turned out rotten...

I dont care if a child is public schooled, private schooled, or home schooled, because I see good and bad kids in both situations...how one raises a child and how a child is educated, cannot be a 100 percent guarantee of how that child will turn out...true, coming from a loving two parent family, and being educated in a constructive and loving way gives a child a better chance at growing up to be a good adult...and coming from a destructive one parent family with no attention to the child, and being educated in a chaotic way provides a few strikes against that child growing up to being a good adult...

But nothing is 100 percent guaranteed...

As this situation in Pennsylvania shows...

What kind of person plans to marry the murderer of her parents?

....could this girl have stated to her boyfriend that she hated her parents and/or wished they were dead for trying to keep them apart. This does not mean she really wanted him to do it, but some young kids hate their parents when they are not allowed the freedom they seek.
