Hey, we still have a working IBM selectric from that era. Anyone want to "play" with it? Offer only open to mischeivous Freepers who want to mess with DU...

Sheesh, you beat me to that suggestion. I was going to say that Buckhead should write a book to refute Ms Mapes and name it Post #47. I was on that live thread that night too. I was very excited to see history obviously being made. That is the beauty of FR. It's "living" history.

Hell, I am just 45, but I knew they were fakes the moment I followed the link to them. I am an electrical engineer that come up at the dawn of the PC age.

My dad was a decorated WW2 B-17 Bomber Pilot, and he flew in the reserves until the 60's. My mom was an executive secretary and typed on everything from the 40's to the 80's.

Looking through all my father's military records you can see that the reserves and the guard did not get advanced, cutting edge computers for routine office use. Documents from his retirement in the 70's are barely Selectric.

The forger had to be both stupid and insane.

Thank you for your kind words.

Back when they were hunting me but had not yet outed me, and there was an ill wind about, there was a thread where a bunch of people stood up and said "I am Buckhead," and "No, I am Buckhead," like in Spartacus. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/1215869/posts. I tell you, I still get a little verklempt when I think about it.

They all know it's a blatant forgery, but the sad fact is that they persist in their insistence (when they are making a stab at explaining why) that all that boozhwa about Bush and the National Guard was certainly true because they WANTED it to be true so bad - and that it's perfectly understandable that a little bit of a gap had to be filled in with "recreations" of what must surely have existed at one time. . or, manufacture needed evidence in order to convict. Welcome to the convoluted world of liberals.

LOL. I remember that! It was so.........Spartacus. Thank you for not being an idiot, Buckhead. Being 47 I may not forgive you for.

In the annals of forgery detective-hood, Buckhead stands out as an extraordinary genius with a keen eye toward font detail.

His name will certainly be held up in admiration 50 years from now, especially as we look back at what COULD HAVE been had Buckhead not been sitting in front of his computer late that evening on Sept. 8, 2004.

Can anyone envision a President Kerry, and how HE would have handled (make that caved in) to the various terror nations and operatives in the year 2005 thru 2013?

I am shuddering as I type.

How do you feel about being a freeper hero? I hope it makes up for the Mapes of the world...

... my preferred font, Palatino 12.

Buckhead....a FReeper with great taste in typeface selection! Although Palatino got overused for a while, it still is my favorite, providing both elegance and efficiency. :-) Mapes wouldn't know a serif from a seraph! WTG, Buckhead!

I used the IBM Composer in a print shop environment around 1974. The back up key only backed up the number of "picas" of the last letter typed. You had to either count all the picas in each letter to back up to correct a mistake, or catch your mistake immediately, before typing more than one character. Being impeccably accurate was a much preferred alternative. I was one of those thousands who saw the truth in Buckhead's post and followed the story's unfolding all night long. Long may you live in the annals of FR!

LOL, I never worked using an IBM Composer and don't even know what a "picas" is! Sounds like a Turkey dropping to me, gobble gobble!

More than you ever wanted to know about "old time typesetting." I have to admit to never having heard of a "cicero."

LOL, thanks for the thought, and the search but that's like reading Greek when you don't know what it's about. Now, if someone was SHOWING me and explaining it I would understand.

Actually the mentions in that thread kind of remind me of that classic TV show "To Tell the Truth". :-)

Basic Premise

The basic premise is simple: Three contestants, each of whom claims to be the same person, are interrogated by a panel of four celebrities in an attempt to identify who is the real one and who is bluffing. The contestant in question usually holds an unusual occupation or has done something noteworthy. After each celebrity has had a turn to question the guests, they each vote as to who they think is the real person. When this is finished, the moderator says the now-famous line, "Will the real ________ please stand up?" The real person stands, the other two then reveal who they really are, and money is awarded to the players based on how many incorrect votes were placed.

Of course, on DU, they were trying to sleuth you out ...... and the clever FReepers were doing their best to deflect their wrath. "Will the real Buckhead please stand up?" :-]
