Gary Glitter 'may face firing squad'

Gary Glitter could face death by firing squad after he was accused of having sex with a girl aged just 12, Vietnamese police have said.

Glitter allegedly had sex with a 12-year-old girl Two girls, aged 12 and 18, told police they had sex with the former singer - real name Paul Francis Gadd - at his rented home in the southern resort of Vung Tau in Vietnam.

Under Vietnamese law, sexual contact with a minor carries varying degrees of penalties, depending on the charge.

"Obscene acts with a child can lead to up to 12 years in prison while child rape carries the maximum penalty of death before a firing squad," a Vietnamese police officer said.

"Having sex with a 12-year-old girl, regardless of whether he had her consent, is still considered child rape under Vietnamese law".

The 61-year-old former singer was arrested two days ago at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City as he tried to flee the country.

He left his rented home in Vung Tau a week ago amid allegations about his relationships with two teenage girls.

Glitter has been taken back to Vung Tau for further investigation by the police.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the arrest of a British national and consular support is being provided."

Glitter was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month jail sentence before being released.

Just incredible that a "backward" communist country like Vietnam "gets it" when it comes to child predators -- and such a penalty would be unthinkable here.

Why?

real name Paul Francis Gadd

Does this mean Gary Glitter is not his real name? Who knew? Oh, Gadd!

They don't cane people in the Philippines.

Frankly, if he had gone to the Philippines I don't think he would have been caught.

Won't happen.
He's being held by one of their favorite regimes, they'd never be critical. Communist VietNam will always be a victim.

I agree. I firmly believe that God has a special place in Hell for those that hurt children.

They have a code. You harm a woman or a child, you don't make it out.

What are you talking about? There are huge numbers of men in prison for raping women, and the vast majority are not killed in prison.

By that statement I can certainly tell that you are not a caring champion of criminal rights. He deserves a fair trial. Is it his fault that he has not been properly retrained to help him with his "love of children" in what some call inappropriate handling?

He is salvageable if he, too, receives the love that he so deserves. Mr.Glitter was one of the "chulrun" at one time. He lives in the greater vicinity of "the village".

Why, I'll bet that he even believes that the USA is a repressive country. That, my friend, is what drove him away to live in a more caring place, where he can love as man should.

That is nothing to loose your head over.

Firing squad would do wonders to this disco queen's fading career. Think Gary Glitter impersonators.

Florida has that law too, and up to about 30 years ago, regularly used and enforced it.

I hope the VC pop a cap in him.

I'm with ya! At least we won't have to worry about him coming to this side of the pond and committing more offenses anytime soon!
