Biden: Chance of filibuster on Alito stronger

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The chance of a filibuster to halt the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel Alito rose on news he once opposed 1960s Supreme Court rulings on reapportionment based on the principle of equal voting rights, a top Democrat on the Senate judiciary panel said on Sunday.

Sen. Joseph Biden, a Democrat from Delaware, told Fox News Sunday that a decision by Democrats to filibuster would depend largely on Alito's answers during judiciary committee questioning scheduled for January.

Prior to the Warren court's decisions, some state legislators were elected on a geographical basis, giving thinly populated rural areas more political heft than urban centers.

"If he really believes that reapportionment is a questionable decision -- that is, the idea of Baker vs. Carr, one man, one vote -- then clearly, clearly, you'll find a lot of people, including me, willing to do whatever they can to keep him off the court. We don't know that. We have to hear it," Biden said. "That would include a filibuster if need be."

Asked if this increased the chances of a filibuster, Biden said: "Well, I think based upon that job application where he said he strongly held these views, yes."

You know, considering their retirement benefits, why DON'T they retire?

Ah yes, they wore out their welcome in "red" states and have to maintain power (for example: Byrd)

None of it has to be true, and the more obscure the charge, the harder it will be to disprove it.

Exactly. republicans allow themselves to be put into the position of having to prove a negative.

When DIMs make outrageous charges they should publicly state that the DIMs must prove those charges. Never appear on the defensive.

Don't say stuff like "whine...it's unfair to say awful things like that....it's so partisan".

Say this: "Those charges are absolute hooey. Put up or shut up. We don't have to disprove them, you have to prove them."
Matter of fact, pubbies should be launching preemptive strikes that say, over and over, how the DIMs are going to lie and smear because they have no case.

If the Republicans haven't been buoyed by the recent public reaction to their decision to have a vote on immediate withdrawal from Iraq, they're hopeless.

If the Dems filibuster Alito, the Repubs will have another chance to show that they have a pair. If they don't, the public will soon forget the brilliance they showed this week in the Iraq vote. Let's see how short their memories are, or whether they give a damn about the opinions of those who put them where they are.

Someone please explain to me why a person is an extremist when they consider the murder of a baby to be wrong, but if you support the right to murder babies, you're "normal".

What slugs dems are - Janet Reno believes in legalized prostitution, lowering the age of consent to 12 etc...she was confirmed.

This is the country we get when we have a spinless GOP and slimeball dems running it.

Biden said: "Well you know what they say; the A students teach, and the B students go to work for the C students"

Yeah sure, Joe....sure......

Hey Biden! Last time I checked, liberal judicial activism violates the principle of "one man, one vote". Since you claim to support that principle, I'm sure you'll join us in demanding that the people (rather than unelected judges) should decide the legality of abortion, voluntary school prayer, and gay "marriage". I also expect you to resign, since the very existence of the U.S. Senate violates the "one man, one vote" principle.

Lest we forget, Joe Biden 1999:

S. 9 (Daschle, Leahy, Biden, Kennedy, Torricelli, Schumer, Dorgan, Kerry, Lautenberg, Mikulski, Breaux, Durbin, Bingaman, Bryan, Moynihan): This is the Democratic version of the juvenile justice bill. It is an encyclopedia of anti-gun provisions. Some of them include:

section 1411, which would impose a lifetime gun ban on virtually anyone caught experimenting with drugs as a child;

imposing a mandatory minimum five-year prison sentence on a person who commits a crime of violence (including threatening to damage property) while "possessing" a firearm (arguably, the firearm does not need to be at the scene of the threat) (section 1413);

imposing a five-year prison sentence for inadvertently violating the labyrinthine rules for training a juvenile to use a handgun (section 1414); creating an across-the-board penalty for "conspiracy" to commit a firearms offense (section 1417);

establishing "juvenile gun courts," while providing no comparable special attention for crimes like murder, rape, etc. (section 1431 et seq.).

I don't have the time or the bandwidth to research the anti-gun salvos fired by Senator Biden in his career, along with his usual suspect partners. He is driven to disarm Americans for some purpose. Constitution be damned.
