With the revelation that Bob Woodward knew Valerie Plame was CIA employee prior to the date Libby could possibly have told anyone about it, the entire case against Libby collapses. It may be a while before Fitzgerald drops the matter, but Libby is out of the woods - not just on the fact that there wasn't even a possibility of an underlying crime, but on account of the fact that Woodward and fellow reporter Pincus have different memories of the event...just as Libby has a different memory of the event from other participants. In other words, rather than there being a lie to the Grand Jury, what we've got is conflicting memories of events that happened quite a while ago in the press of many other events, almost all of which far more important than a has-been Ambassador and his CIA-employee wife.
This whole thing was fueled by the left's overwhelming desire to impeach President Bush. It was shortly after the Plame kerfuffle errupted that it was proven quite conclusively that Plame could not have been a covert CIA agent, and thus the statutes protecting covert identity didn't apply...and yet the matter was referred to Justice for criminal investigation, even though - come on, people; let's be honest here - even if Plame's name really were leaked, it wasn't exactly the only leak at CIA that day...or, indeed, that minute.

Anyone in their right mind think Woodward will be fired?????? Not a chance in hell. He is a living god to the lunatic left and NOTHING could bring him down.
The fact that she worked at Langley pretty much proves she wasnt a covert agent. What spy agency would have their covert agents report at Langley? That would be stupid.

Mark Noonan is being too logical...or naive. The mere fact that there is no reason to continue to go after Libby doesn't mean that Fitzgerald will drop the charges against him. As long as the case gets assigned to a Clinton-appointed judge and the jury is reflective of the DC voting population, he has a chance to win a conviction in the first round (which will probably be reversed on appeal).
I would so love to be Mr. Libby's lawyer right now, writing up the subpoenas. Talk about an embarrasment of riches!
It has often been said that an ambitious prosecutor can trip up and indict anybody. And with a jury of Republican-hating black women from DC, he can probably convict anybody. This could be a long, long process, because it's clear that Fitzgerald has a political agenda, has the backing of the left-wing press, and even has the backing of the leftists in the Justice Department that Bush failed to weed out.
Justice and rationality may declare that Libby is innocent, but Fitzgerald is determined to plow ahead and indict more Republicans. That's obvious. As for the real guilty parties, they have nothing to fear from him.
I want an hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year accounting of how Fitz spent his time and our money. The investigation has been a fraud on the taxpayers.
I don't buy that, fitzgerald is making noises about another Grand Jury. He won't quit until he is dragged out kicking and screaming.
The same was thought of Dan Rather. He brought himself down, as it would seem, has Woodward.
and there is no one who can drag him out. so long as the administration keeps calling this a "serious investigation", Fitzgerald will just continue. He's not going to drop the charges against Libby (barring some bombshell we have yet to see), he's going to "double down" with another indictment.
The loony left has been very unhappy with Woodward for the last few years. They think he's way too cozy with the Bush Administration and has sold out to them. Check out a Woodward thread on DU - the venom and hatred directed at him will leave you shaking your head.
Hmmm...indeed...the whole thing is reminiscent of...a spy novel....why would Judith Miller protect neocon Libby in the first place? Why would Woodward rescue Libby? There's apparently more to this story than meets the eye...
Good find. This is a very nice summary of the entire Plame fiasco.
One thing he does not have and that is DNA on the dress quality evidence. With Woodward's disclosure Libby's recollections look less like lies and more like mistakes.
Memo to Fritz: get this over and done with, so Libby can go back to his job.
No, but he'll forever be remembered as the reporter who was willing to let an innocent man go to jail because he didn't want the inconvenience of being subpoenaed. He was willing to trade confidentiality of his source for taking down an innocent government official.
