Schwarzenegger unsure on Williams clemency
Science Daily ^ | November 18

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he is undecided on whether to grant clemency in the high-profile case of condemned killer Stanley Tookie Williams.

Williams, co-founder of the Crips gang, is scheduled to be executed Dec. 13 for the killings of four people.

Law enforcement officials have launched an unusually fierce campaign to block clemency, The Los Angeles Times said Friday. Officials are asking the governor to reject pleas from clergy, legislators and entertainers that Williams has redeemed himself by his work on death row to dissuade young people from joining gangs.

Speaking to reporters in Shanghai, Schwarzenegger said he had not made up his mind on the Williams case. He described the decision as "part of the job" but one that he approached with "dread."

The governor has almost total discretion in deciding clemency, which would commute Williams' death sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

I hope Arnold doesn't wimp out. After his defeat last election day, I'm wondering if he feels the need to make friends. I'm worried. This guy (Tookie) is one bad dude, and I don't get it that Hollywood is trying to save him.

Arnold should wait to Dec. 12 to announce Tookie's unfortunate fate...

His comment about not having made a decision yet, is par for the course. I do hope he has, and it's negative with regard to the clemency.

This guy should fry. The needle is too gentle for the likes of him.

In his 2004 memoir, "Blue Rage, Black Redemption," Williams said that his gangster life ended in 1992 Williams, 51, has been behind bars since 1979, when he shot and killed four people during two robberies in Los Angeles. He has been on death row since 1981 and is set to die by injection Dec. 13

Williams has refused to formally renounce his gang membership and submit to "debriefing" — that is, inform on his old friends. Crittendon also cited Williams' willingness to share an exercise yard with Crips and his unusually large prison bank account. And he said Williams' younger son is a trouble-making Crips member in prison for murder.

As for his bank account..high profile inmates such as Scott Peterson usually get $10 or $20 checks, Williams receives checks for $500 or $1,000 at a time.

If Arnold expects the GOP nomination for governor in 06 he better let this scum bag die.

Arnold needs to give every clemency case his careful attention. He can't very well say that he has made up his mind before it comes to him. I'm not generally happy with him as governor, but you can't fault him for this.

Then he'd better get sure. This guy deserves a needle--the faster the better.

If Arnold continues to go all wobbly on us, we may have another one of those Rose Bird moments. That's where you either get tossed out of office on your ass or fail to win reelection.

I hope this is just lip service to quiet the "but he's a changed man" crowd.

Good Grief!

"Remember, Tookie, when I promised to kill you last?"
"That's right, Arnold, you did!"
"I lied."

Tookie, although only convicted of four murders, was probably responsible for hundreds more. Al Capone was never convicted of murder, but directly and indirectly murdered hundreds.
