Wow, someone in the Vatican with intellectual honesty. If this were the 17th century he would be burned at the stake.

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican's chief astronomer said Friday that "intelligent design" isn't science and doesn't belong in science classrooms, the latest high-ranking Roman Catholic official to enter the evolution debate in the United States. The Rev. George Coyne, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said placing intelligent design theory alongside that of evolution in school programs was "wrong" and was akin to mixing apples with oranges. If it involves that particular debate, anybody and everybody who cares will get to the other two. If they haven't already, which I doubt.

"If they respect the results of modern science, and indeed the best of modern biblical research, religious believers must move away from the notion of a dictator God or a designer God, a Newtonian God who made the universe as a watch that ticks along regularly."

The above exhibits an utter ignorance in regards to the argument that modern design theorists are making. There is no assumption of any kind of God, or even that there is a God. The argument simply proposes the theory that design, as well as chance and necessity, plays a part in the "evolution" of life as we know it. There are a number of Creationists and other religious folks in the movement, who are firmly to a particular understanding of God, but the design theory itself goes no further than postulating that design most likely played a role in the evolutionary process. The philosophical argument for design goes back to Aristotle, whom the Medieval Churchmen picked it up from, rather than the bible. That being the case, it is really irrelevant to the argument from design what modern biblical research has discovered.

OK if you are gonna listen to a Jesuit. He is my pre-programmed response.

There was a guy whose parents promised that when he graduated college, they would buy him a Lexus. His parents told him this several years ago but never mentioned it again. The guy thought about this every time that it seemed like college was too much. It was his driving force, so to speak.

Time for graduation was getting ever so close and still no word from the parents. The guy was getting worried and he sought some spiritual help.

He went to a Franciscan priest friend and said, "Father I have a special request. My parents promised to buy a Lexus for me when I graduate. My time is close and I am afraid they might not come through. Can you pray a Novena for that intention?"

The Franciscan priest said, "Son, before I agree to this request please explain to me what a Lexus is." "Oh I'm sorry father" explained the guy, "its a big, fancy, expensive automobile." "I will pray this novena for you." said the Franciscan.

The guy was still unsure so he went to a Benedictine priest. He asked, "Father I have a special request. My parents promised to buy a Lexus for me when I graduate. My time is close and I am afraid they might not come through. Can you pray a Novena for that intention?"

The Benedictine priest said, "Son, before I agree to this request please explain to me what a Lexus is." "Oh I'm sorry father" explained the guy, "its a big, fancy, expensive automobile." "I will pray this novena for you." said the Benedictine.

Still this guy was unsure so he went to a Jesuit priest. He said, "Father I have a special request. My parents promised to buy a Lexus for me when I graduate. My time is close and I am afraid they might not come through. Can you pray a Novena for that intention?"

The Jesuit priest said, "Son, before I agree to this request please explain something to me." "Oh I'm sorry father" explained the guy, "its a big, fancy, expensive automobile." "No I understand that," said the Jesuit priest, "What's a Novena?"

I wonder how many opponents of ID have actually studied ID...with the intellectual honesty that they study other theories. I suspect few have...and that is intellectual dishonesty!

I think the problem is that they do study it with the intellectual honesty with which they study evolution.

Many seem to be writing off ID as a Creationism clone without ever really bothering to discuss the arguments made by design theorists. It is a lot easier to beat up on an artificial straw man than to engage a real opponent.
