AMVETS APPLAUDS HOUSE FOR FLAG SUPPORT
WASHINGTON, June 4—House passage today of a bill to outlaw desecration of the U.S. flag was hailed as “the first step toward returning the American people’s right to protect their flag” by the nation’s fourth largest veterans service organization.
Calling the 300-125 vote in favor of a constitutional amendment to protect the flag “the right thing to do,” AMVETS National Commander W.G. “Bill” Kilgore had high praise for supporters of the amendment. “This vote recognizes that the flag embodies the liberties we cherish as free Americans, and with the President’s support it raises the hope that the Senate will follow suit and give us all a chance to finally put things back into place. I applaud the House action.”
The House measure, H.J. Res. 4, was introduced January 7 by Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R-50-CA). Its wording states that “Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.”
This bill received strong opposition from Rep. John Murtha (D-12-PA) as "unbelievable intrusion into freedom of speech for protestors."
