Lawmakers Reject Immediate Iraq Withdrawal

The House on Friday overwhelmingly rejected calls for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq, a vote engineered by the Republicans that was intended to fail. Democrats derided the vote as a political stunt.

"Our troops have become the enemy. We need to change direction in Iraq," said Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a Democratic hawk whose call a day earlier for pulling out troops sparked a nasty, personal debate over the war.

The House voted 403-3 to reject a nonbinding resolution calling for an immediate troop withdrawal.

"We want to make sure that we support our troops that are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We will not retreat," Speaker Dennis Hastert, R- Ill., said as the GOP leadership pushed the issue to a vote over the protest of Democrats.

It was the second time in less than a week that President Bush's Iraq policy stirred heated debate in Congress. On Tuesday, the Senate defeated a Democratic push for Bush to lay out a timetable for withdrawal.

Murtha, a 73-year-old Marine veteran decorated for combat service in Vietnam, issued his call for a troop withdrawal at a news conference on Thursday. In little more than 24 hours, Hastert and Republicans decided to put the question to the House.

Democrats said it was a political stunt and quickly decided to vote against it in an attempt to drain it of significance.

"A disgrace," declared House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "The rankest of politics and the absence of any sense of shame," added Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 House Democrat.

What's amazing to me is how the Left has become so desperate that they've seem to have abandoned any attempt to hide what they're up to. No less an authority on the workings of the terrorist's mind than OBL said right out loud that it was our decision to cut and run in Somalia that convinced AQ that they could pull off a 9/11 type attack without fear of reprisals from us.

What more does the Left need to understand damage their shameful attacks are doing to endanger our fighting forces?

I love the irony that the Left is screaming 'foul' and calling the vote tonight a 'cheap political trick.' Well, if anyone should know cheap political trickery, it would certainly be them!

I guess...I am sure the guy is on top of it. I just cringe when I think we are missing opportunities to take these guys out. Put a bird up with some thermal imagery and we'll find em.

Murtha then voted against withdrawing the troops.

180 degrees within 24 hours must cause some kind of whiplash.

The DemonRATS do not want the victory in Iraq to be the Republican's under President Bush. They do not want our brave sons who are fighting for freedom to have victory under President Bush. They do not want the security of this nation nor of the world to be made secure through the freedom gained by oppressed people around the world if is gained with the help of President Bush and freedom loving people around the world.

The DemonRATs want the victory to be under their control so that the wheel of socialism can turn the fire of freedom into the yoke of communism. When you ask these mutant demons what they would do to bring about a perfect world, the answer comes with the actions of their barbarian followers: brute savagery that would put as many humans as possible under the bondage of fascist totalitarianism.

Just goes to show that Democrats would rather have the issue of the war than end it.

Just substitute any and every issue you care to name in place of "the war" and you have the entire Democrat party strategy for eternity...

Murtha ended his and the democrats' remarks in the debate with some nonsense about soldiers accusing him of being complicit with Bush in committing the tortures at Abu Grahib. Before that it was all horror stories about soldiers being mistreated by their branches of service, etc. Some message of support for the troops.

Please don't belittle McCain for his time as a POW. His politics may be chickensh@t, but unless you've been a POW or looked at the back end of a carrier at night, don't criticize his service in the Navy.

I am very surprised that both Lee and Jackson-Lee voted "no". And what's up with Jindal? He's been something of a disappointment.

I agree with you, sir, and thank you for putting into words my exact sentiments. It's truly time to identify the Democrats as the dangerous partisans they are. That is, they exalt Party loyalty above the national interest and call it "conscience".

What worthless, conniving, gutterhugging creeps!

It is a disgrace and a shame according to Democrats when you force a politician to stop blabbing and start voting. :-(
