The House on Friday overwhelmingly rejected calls for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq, a vote engineered by the Republicans that was intended to fail. Democrats derided the vote as a political stunt.
"Our troops have become the enemy. We need to change direction in Iraq," said Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a Democratic hawk whose call a day earlier for pulling out troops sparked a nasty, personal debate over the war.
The House voted 403-3 to reject a nonbinding resolution calling for an immediate troop withdrawal.
"We want to make sure that we support our troops that are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We will not retreat," Speaker Dennis Hastert, R- Ill., said as the GOP leadership pushed the issue to a vote over the protest of Democrats.
It was the second time in less than a week that President Bush's Iraq policy stirred heated debate in Congress. On Tuesday, the Senate defeated a Democratic push for Bush to lay out a timetable for withdrawal.
Murtha, a 73-year-old Marine veteran decorated for combat service in Vietnam, issued his call for a troop withdrawal at a news conference on Thursday. In little more than 24 hours, Hastert and Republicans decided to put the question to the House.
Democrats said it was a political stunt and quickly decided to vote against it in an attempt to drain it of significance.
"A disgrace," declared House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "The rankest of politics and the absence of any sense of shame," added Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 House Democrat.

My head hurts..they were so disgusted that they voted for the political stunt??????
When the chips were down the Dems didn't date to actually vote against it, and then have the disaster be laid directly at their feet.
But I think I finally figured out why they are making these attacks and demands now: I think the tide has turned in Iraq and we are making real progress and they are afraid, that if we stay, Iraq will stabilize and everyone will see the President Bush was right, JUST IN TIME FOR THE 2006 ELECTIONS.
So they are trying to do everything to demoralize our troops, push President Bush into premature withdrawal, so that we would end up in a quagmire, then they can blame it all on President Bush, just before the 2006 elections.
I think that is a very poor platform to run on, but the Dems have nothing to offer.

You should have heard the rousing call to arms Rep Trent gave (R) saying that we can't turn back from fighting the evil Isllamic idealogy and he tied it all together from the attack on our troops in Beirut to the grade school in Belarus to the atrocities in Yugoslavia to the attack on the Cole to the Twin Towers to the war in Iraq, the bombings in Spain and in London..he was magnificent!

Murtha and the entire Democrat Party should burn in hell for eternity. God, in his mercy may forgive them, I certainly won't!!! These pieces of human vermin are causing American military men and women to be killed by their aiding and abetting the enemy in time of war. I hope the American people wake up, rise up and completely destroy this traitor political party at the polls in 2006 and 2008. Doing anything less is putting your loved ones in mortal danger!!!
