Prosecutors say Death Row inmate deserves execution [Tookie Williams]
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 11/18/5 | Bob Egelko

Posted on 11/18/2005 1:02:04 PM PST by SmithL

Condemned murderer Stanley Tookie Williams, an ex-gang leader who became an anti-gang crusader in prison, is a "cold-blooded killer'' who disavows "any responsibility for the brutal, destructive and murderous acts he committed'' and deserves to be executed Dec. 13, Los Angeles prosecutors said Thursday.

Williams and his defenders say he is not the man he was when he was arrested for four killings in the Los Angeles area in 1979, and they are hoping that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will commute his sentence to life without parole.

Williams has written nine books for children and youths since 1993, has taped anti-violence messages and has drafted a peace treaty that his attorney say has been used to settle gang wars. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize each year since 2000, initially by a member of the Swiss Parliament and more recently by a Bay Area philosophy professor. His attorneys say 30,000 people have signed an online clemency petition.

Prosecutors are unimpressed.

He only likes killing if it isn't him being killed.

I have to agree with the prosecutors. He was convicted and sentenced. Am I missing anything here? His behavior since has attracted attention...imagine the Swiss..Nobel prize..(Jimmy Carter campaigned for his, YUK) but should not change the sentence. Sorry Tookie

Why kill him? He seems to be doing a lot of good in prison.

Although if the jury voted for execution, the people's wishes should be carried out.

"He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize each year since 2000, initially by a member of the Swiss Parliament ....."

LOL !!! He almost joined the peace making ranks of Yasser Arafat and Jimmy Carter!!

And who cares what he has done since he got sentanced? He still has murders to pay for. Writing childrens books and sucking up to liberals doesnt make erase the murders. Who cares what kind of person he is now? The sentance is for what he did long before prison. Liberals are so stewped.

He is still active in the gang he founded. The murders he did were horendous, the evidence is unrefutable, and he has exhausted all his appeals.

Williams has written nine books...

Lets not fall for this routine again. Does the name Jack Abbott ring a bell? He was the charming fellow that Norman Mailer got sprung from prison. Problem was, once he was out, ol' Jack couldn't resist his old habits. A short time after he was released he stabbed some poor busboy or waiter to death outside the place the kid worked at. Mark Twain wrote a great piece called "Lionizing Murderers about this nonsense of the weak minded to take up the cause for murdering scum they wouldn't give the time of day to if they met them on the street. Look it up and read it and see if it doesn't ring true today.

"...he is not the man he was when he was arrested for four killings in the Los Angeles area in 1979..."

His victims, however, are just as dead.

He's been such a wonderful role model and example of redemption, that both of his sons have also been convicted of murder.

I don't think our feet should be so quick to shed blood, as his were at one time.

Regardless of what the whole world may think, even the worst among us can be redeemed. I must ask this question: what is gained by killing this man? It's not like he's going to hurt anyone else; he's in prison for the rest of his life. What I see among many is not a desire for justice; it's a desire for revenge, dressed up in the clothing of justice in order to make people feel better about it. Gives it a friendlier face, you see.

Without actually talking to the guy, it's hard to know for sure if he's changed. But he seems to be doing a positive thing now, and even if it is for his own benefit, I've learned not to complain when people do positive things, even if they're for the wrong reasons.

OK, let's make it really fair. If even one of the people he killed will say even one little word in his favor, he should be released.

Dear JamesP81,

"I must ask this question: what is gained by killing this man? It's not like he's going to hurt anyone else; he's in prison for the rest of his life."

I don't know a lot about this case, and thus, my initial impression was similar to yours. However, even in the brief SF Gate article, one can read between the lines that this individual is still cooperating with the street gang he once led, to who knows what harm and mayhem.

Between his failure to do what he can to shut down the street gangs, and his failure to accept his responsibility for cold-blooded murder of four human beings, it's clear that if he were let off the hook for these murders, he might very well kill again.

Reluctantly, I think it's necessary to execute this individual.

The corrections officials say he is still runnung the Crypts from behind bars. That is enough to fry him.

Why would any street gang listen to a fellow who is soon to be a goner? One would think they'd find a different leader.

Something about this whole affair smells like, after he is gone, he is going to get played up as a martyr to the childrens' audience. What kind of trouble this could brew up in the long term, is anybody's guess. On the other hand, if he is allowed to live, he will be treated on the street as a Mumia for the duration of his life. One could wish that he would just croak soon of his own accord.
