Fitzgerald sees new grand jury proceedings

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said in court filings that the ongoing CIA leak investigation will involve proceedings before a new grand jury, a possible sign he could seek new charges in the case.

In filings obtained by Reuters on Friday, Fitzgerald said "the investigation is continuing" and that "the investigation will involve proceedings before a different grand jury than the grand jury which returned the indictment" against Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

Fitzgerald did not elaborate in the document. For two years he has been investigating the leak of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity. The grand jury that indicted Libby expired after the charges were filed late last month.

President George W. Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, was not indicted along with Libby. But lawyers involved in the case said Rove remained under investigation and may still be charged.

Earlier this week Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward disclosed that he testified under oath to Fitzgerald that a senior Bush administration official had casually told him in mid-June 2003 about CIA operative Valerie Plame's position at the agency.

Fitzgerald's comments about bringing proceedings before a different grand jury were contained in court filings in which he backed off seeking a blanket order to keep all documents in the CIA leak case secret.

I'm actually speechless. It's like losing a baseball game, then remaining at home plate waiting for someone to pitch to you.

Yes. My fault. I should really keep account of every article posted on this site. There are so few, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Can't Fitzgerald find productive work? Or is this such a superb gig? It is starting to look as though Fitzgerald and I were the only people in North America who didn't know that Plame and Wilson knew (know) one another.

It's time for the Justice Department to end this guy's mandate. Enough already. He couldn't find any law being broken by revealing the hack pencil pusher Plame's identity to begin with, and now he wants a new grand jury?? This guy is turning out to be everything Democrats said Ken Starr was, an overzealous prosecutor. Can you imagine if Ken Starr had stuck around after impeachment continuing to form new grand juries? This guy needs to be sent packing. He serves no purpose other than to the DNC and the MSM to keep feeding them fodder. Enough already. Who is this guy? Javier from Les Miserable? Get a real job guy...I'm tired of you being on my payroll feeding the Democratic propaganda machine with nonsense.

Is he expecting them against himself for his conduct of the investigation before the grand jury that indicted Scooter?

Ronnie Earl called and explained all his underhanded and unethical practices, and Fitzy is jumping all over it like a poodle chasing a ball.

The only thing that would make this worthwhile is if it were a Democrat who gets indicted.

How many millions of dollars are we going to spend investigating something that obviously was not a crime to begin with.

The only thing that's come out of this so far is an accusation, which appears to have been poorly investigated, that Libby lied to investigators.

This has been a long, and expensive investigation. It is supposed to be a criminal investigation investigating the leak. The first goal of the investigation should have been to determine if a crime was committed. If there was no crime committed, the investigation should have been over at that point.

This has beecome a mocery of a criminal investigation. Fitzgerald should be canned and be held accountable for wasting many millions of taxpayers dollars on a witch hunt.

It could be simply a ploy to try to keep the evidence secret.

He had to give some reason why it would make sense to keep the evidence secret. The "possibility" of a new grand jury would be such a reason.

So this might NOT be a signal of a new grand jury, just a "possibility" used to try to convince the judge to keep some information secret.

this clown Fitzgerald is just milking the American taxpayers for every dime he can!
These special prosecutors are a total waste of time and taxpayers' dollars! PERIOD!

Any "beat cop" in America could have determined in a day what Fitzgerald has been wasting two years doing and that's that Valerie Plame was NOT A COVERT AGENT and hence there was no "outing" and hence there was no crime.

Now, Fitzgerald can dance around this issue til hell freezes over but that's the bottom line!

Woodward punched a hole in Fitzerald's prosecution. The obstruction charge is rooted in the perjury charge. The gist of that charge is that Libby lied when years later he testified that he thought it was a reporter, who Libby remembered being Russert, who told him about Plame. Russert said, "no, it wasn't me". Ergo, Libby perjured himself. Woodward has now come forward and mentioned that he, Woodward, talked with Libby about Plame in the days around Libby's talk with Russert. Hence, maybe years later Libby was confused, which is not perjury.
