BRAVE NEW SCHOOLS: Prof urges fragging of U. S. Officers

'Real freedom will come when American soldiers murder superiors'

When Rebecca Beach, a freshman at Warren Community College in New Jersey e-mailed faculty announcing a campus program yesterday featuring decorated Iraq war hero Lt. Col. Scott Rutter, the response she got from one English professor took her aback.

English professor John Daly replied: "Real freedom will come when soldiers in Iraq turn their guns on their superiors."

Daly added that he would ask his students to boycott the event and also vowed "to expose [her] right-wing, anti-people politics until groups like [Rebecca’s] won’t dare show their face on a college campus."

Besides organizing the event, Beach's offense was hanging up fliers contrasting the number of people killed under communism to those liberated under the late President Ronald Reagan, according to Young America's Foundation, which came to Beach's aid.

In response to the written tirade, Beach is demanding that Warren Community College President William Austin institute seminars on free speech and sensitivity to teach intolerant faculty members to be respectful of differing opinion.

The college has posted a statement on its website repudiating Prof. Daly's comments.

The viewpoints of this professor in no way depict the views of Warren County Community College, its administration, or the Board of Trustees. The College does however support the constitution, the first amendment, and the right to free speech.

Additionally, Mr. Daly's message was sent as a one-to-one message, via e-mail, to one person, and not to the college community. Finally, the College is viewing this message as a personnel issue and will be addressing it according to the policies and procedures of the College.

Daly's e-mail also claimed that "capitalism has killed many more" people than communism and that "poor and working class people" are recruited to "fight and die for EXXON and other corporations."

"John Daly was hired to teach English, not to verbally attack students and lead leftist protests," said Jason Mattera, spokesman for Young America’s Foundation.

Professor defends position on ending the war in Iraq

Campus controversy. U.S. using Middle East as a "profit source," adjunct faculty member claims.
Friday, November 18, 2005
By SARA LEITCH
The Express-Times

A part-time professor at Warren County Community College stands by some controversial comments he e-mailed to a student there that have raised eyebrows around the country.

John Daly, an adjunct English professor, said Thursday he believes the war in Iraq will end only when American soldiers turn their guns on their commanders.

"The only possible end for the war is not going to be from our politicians, who represent corporations," Daly said. "We're going to stay in Iraq and occupy the Middle East as a profit source that will only change when the students at WCCC who are sent there to die for oil profits decide they're not going to die there."

Daly said he was a member of International ANSWER, an anti-war group. He e-mailed WCCC freshman Rebecca Beach on Sunday, responding to her request to tell his students about a campus visit by retired Lt. Col. Scott Rutter. Daly's message eventually reached conservative broadcaster Sean Hannity, who read it Thursday during his nationally syndicated radio program.

Rutter, now a Fox News commentator, spoke Thursday about his experiences in Iraq as a battalion commander in the first and current wars in Iraq, and on the way the media report on Iraq.

Beach, a pre-law and political science major, founded the WCCC chapter of Young Americans for Freedom, a national conservative activist group. The group has about 15 members, Beach said.

The group used $1,000 in student activities fees to bring Rutter to campus. The Young America's Foundation, which brings conservative speakers to college campuses, co-sponsored Rutter's talk.

"The administration at WCCC believes Rebecca Beach is an innocent student acting alone, but I recognized her literature right away as being part of a national right-wing movement," Daly said. "Her group is an ultra right-wing, possibly fascist, group."

Beach, who said she has never met Daly, said she invited Rutter to campus as part of her group's celebration of Freedom Week, which commemorates Veterans Day and the toppling of the Berlin Wall on Nov. 9, 1989.

She said she was shocked by Daly's message.

"We were just celebrating and raising awareness," Beach said. "We want free speech and tolerance, and they want it for themselves and not for others. That's just utterly ridiculous."

Subject: Problems accessing the public website for Warren County Community College

Dear sir,
The public website for the Warren County Community College seems to be having some sort of technical problem. The site is no requesting a user name and password to access.

I have never seen this situation where the general public is denied access to general information about a publicly funded institution and I am assuming this must be some sort of temporary technical issue which will be resolved soon.

Please can you have this corrected as soon as practical as there remain several thousand concerned citizens out here who are on pins and needles awaiting the announcement of Mr. Daly's release from his responsibilities at Warren.  We are all quite confident that you have no thoughts of keeping such an intellectual thug and outright criminal on your staff, not even as "part time".  If there remain any second thoughts on this issue, you should probably re-consider your options.

Looking forward to seeing the website open to the public again and to the new press release to be posted there soon.

Best regards,
xxxxx

Dear Ms. Leitch,

Thank you for the article regarding Mr. Daly and events at the Warren County Community College.  Below you will find a message just sent to Mr. Austin about the technical issues Warren seems to be having with their public website and I have also included a few URLs where this issue is being debated nationally online.

All for the good of the children, you can rest assured.

This reminds me of Jay Leno's "Jay watch", when he was on the street asking people how many dimes there are in a dollar. One bimbo, who claimed to be in the process of getting her teaching certificate, claimed there were 5 dimes in a dollar.

Actually, there are 5 dimes in a dollar, two sets of them. There are also 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 dimes in a dollar.

But I'm a mathematician and that's how I think.

My email:

Mr. Daly,

Intolerant pedants, which you may be, do not see the justification for freedom of speech for all, not just those with whom they agree. That is why our forbears went to war and won our freedom and with it the ability to write a constitution guaranteeing our important liberties. Those whom American patriots opposed were intolerant smug individuals, so, as it appears, are you. Thank God for free speech, and God bless America and our brave soldiers both on the front lines; and God bless those brave conservative students who dare speak out in the tyrannical hell holes that have become our college campuses. Yours truly,

(my name)

V's wife

Bump this one to the top again.  The school has issued a new press release and while it does sound like they may yet do something, results are not in hand just yet. Read it for yourself at http://www.warren.edu  a few excerpts I'd like to point out however:

If any of you have not already, please contact the Board of Trustees keeping this issue in their face until Mr. Daly is gone for good.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm tired of seeing examples like this go unpunished and allowed to stand. This type of behavior on our campuses has simply got to stop and stop here.

For immediate release:
November 19, 2005

Warren County Community College to Hold an Emergency Meeting

The Board of Trustees of Warren County Community College will convene an emergency meeting of the Board, Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at 6:30 PM. This meeting was called by Board Chair Edward Smith.

The Board of Trustees intends to consider the welfare and rights of its students, the college community, and the public in lieu of recent events. The Board will also consider personnel issues.

The college President, Dr. William Austin reiterates his statement that comments made by Mr. Daly are his own. The opinions Mr. Daly has expressed do not represent the views of the community college, administration, faculty, staff or students, nor do his views align with the college’s mission and core values.

College President Dr. Austin said, “The Board of Trustees’ meeting is scheduled for the first legally available date.”

All, in light of this Emergency Meeting of the Board of Trustees and considering the tone of this press release, I am far more optimistic than earlier this morning or at any time since this incident began.  I intend to send only one more email to the Board and to Mr. Austin, this time a more friendly note of encouragement and thanks for doing the right thing, and give them the benefit of doubt on this until the meeting adjourns on Tuesday evening.

It would seem that between the radio programs and the appearance on Hannity & Colmes, that Miss Breach may soon have the apology due her.

Cheers,
Lloyd

Subject: A note of encouragement re. the board meeting on Tuesday
Mr. Austin

The 19 November press release regarding the board meeting scheduled for Tuesday night was a very smart move.  Nicely done.

Considering the very public flogging you and your colleagues have received this past week regarding the situation around Mr. Daly's email and his public remarks since, I felt it may be appropriate to send you a more friendly note and say that those of us watching this issue can sense a tone in the press release which implies this issue is very close to being appropriately resolved.

The fact that this meeting has been called and the tone of the press release has convinced most of us that the leadership at WCCC recognizes that Mr. Daly's attempts to threaten and intimidate a young student regarding her political activities far exceeds any private expression of his own views, represents an abuse of his position of authority in respect to this student and in no way does his response to her email fall under the protection of free speech we all respect and enjoy.

We are all very hopeful that this situation will soon be resolved and behind us.  Please ensure that the results from the meeting on Tuesday are made publicly available as soon as it is appropriate to do so.

Best regards,
xxxxxxx

Not only thank you for composing this ping list…I suggest you keep it for future freepings of the tyranny of liberal academia.

It’s time we fight back when liberal academia oppresses half this countries students, “red state’rs” if you will, if they share their political views.

I’ll never forget a quote from a professor at Brown University last year…”If I find out you voted for Bush, you will fail my class.”

Mr. DiMaio just emailed me this personal press release he has issued:

Press Release:

November 18, 2005

Contact-                       Freeholder John DiMaio

                                    Freeholderdimaio@aol.com

                                    1-973-219-9770

As a county freeholder for five years I have become a supporter of Warren County Community College during my time in office. Recently, a part-time adjunct instructor, Mr. John Daly responded to a student’s invitation to attend a student club event sponsored by Young Americans for Freedom. After reading Mr. John Daly’s e-mail response I feel personally offended and believe that no student of our college should have to endure such an outrageous assault. Further, I feel our troops and our leaders have been wrongfully maligned. As a leader in Warren County concerned with the use of our tax dollars, I am even more offended that our taxes have gone to support his malicious rhetoric.

However, I can assure all Warren County residents that this part-time adjunct instructor for the college does not represent the views of the college, President Austin, or the board of trustees, many of whom I voted to appoint.

I have complete confidence in the College administration and their ability to investigate this situation and handle it judiciously and expeditiously. The college President has assured me that the investigation has been elevated to ensure the safety of all concerned. Warren County Community College has become a college that serves our community and one that we should continue to proudly support. As college liaison, I am continuously in communication with President Austin and he is keeping me well informed. Although I cannot personally be satisfied with the outcome at this point, I know that he, his administration, and the Board will resolve this issue as quickly as is legally possible.

WCCC e-mail inquiry goes on

School president. "I personally find e-mail disgraceful and offensive."
Saturday, November 19, 2005
By SARA LEITCH
The Express-Times

Administrators at Warren County Community College said Friday they were investigating the classroom conduct of an adjunct professor who e-mailed comments about the Iraq war to the founder of a conservative student group.

"I personally find Mr. Daly's e-mail disgraceful and offensive, yet I must maintain that the college be a place for free expression, ideas, and open debate," college president Will Austin said in a statement.

English Professor John Daly, a member of the anti-war group International A.N.S.W.E.R., e-mailed WCCC freshman Rebecca Beach on Sunday, responding to her request to tell his students about a campus visit by retired Lt. Col. Scott Rutter, a veteran of the Iraq war and now a Fox News commentator.

Beach founded the campus chapter of Young Americans for Freedom, a national conservative activist group. Her group, and the conservative Young America's Foundation, brought Rutter to campus to speak about his experiences in Iraq.

In his e-mail to Beach, who was not his student, Daly wrote that he believes the war will end only when American soldiers turn their guns on their commanding officers.

College officials said they were investigating Daly's e-mail message, as well as his conduct and his expression of views in the classroom on campus.

"We must remember that Mr. Daly is just one instructor out of many here," Austin said. "He does not represent the college's views, mission and core values. We are a small community college and are here to serve the community and will continue to do so."

Reached by telephone Friday, Daly said he didn't believe the college could investigate an e-mail he sent as a private communication.

Once again, he stood by his statements on the future of the war in Iraq. He reiterated his belief that soldiers are being sent there to benefit oil companies.

"A lot of people are really upset about this main comment, my belief, and the belief of others, and the historical evidence that the war will end when soldiers turn around and fight for social justice here at home," Daly said.

He said he had been horrified to learn that soldiers used white phosphorus, an incendiary weapon, during the battle for Fallujah in 2004.

"That violence has been going on, by the U.S. military, using working and poor people like the students at WCCC who die for oil profits," Daly said. "There's plenty of evidence now."

Beach appeared on Fox New Channel's "Hannity and Colmes" on Friday night. She told the show's hosts she believed Daly should be fired.

College officials have said they are treating Daly's e-mail as a personnel issue. Daly said he was talking with college officials about his employment at the school.

"We're in discussions right now about our future relationship," he said. "That will probably be finalized sometime next week."
