This will be remembered as the week when President Bush lost control over the Iraq war debate. His administration has perhaps six months to get things right. If the situation in Iraq fails to improve significantly, public pressure for withdrawal will become irresistible.
There was a political thunderclap across the capital yesterday when Rep. John Murtha -- Marine veteran, defense specialist, longtime hawk and traditional supporter of presidential prerogatives in foreign policy -- called for pulling American troops out of Iraq. American soldiers, he said, "have done all they can in Iraq." Continued engagement by American troops was "not in the best interest of the United States."
To understand what these words meant coming from this tough, moderately conservative Pennsylvania Democrat, try to imagine Bush calling for increasing taxes on the rich or Arnold Schwarzenegger criticizing bodybuilding. Support for the administration's war strategy is crumbling.
Murtha's comments came just days after the Senate sent Bush a signal of its own. Only five of 44 Democrats voted against the party's amendment to the defense bill calling for estimated timetables on withdrawing from Iraq. The tally pointed to the end of Democratic fear of retaliation from Bush on national security issues. The political shock and awe that the administration regularly deployed after Sept. 11, 2001, no longer works.
Even more alarming for Bush is the fact that Senate Republican leaders felt obligated to introduce and pass their own resolution declaring 2006 "a period of significant transition to full Iraqi sovereignty." The resolution called, without specific timetables, for "creating the conditions for the phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq."

If the situation in Iraq fails to improve significantly... This is utter bull. The Bush haters have no idea what's going on in Iraq and they don't care. In six months they will be bad-mouthing the situation there absolutely as much as possible, just like now, no matter what happens between now and then.

I listen to the asshole Rep. John Murtha , on PBS tonight and almost threw my plate of food at the moron box screen. Had I a bottle of whiskey, don't drink the garbage, I would have tossed it into the screen. Such an ill-informed moron at best. The low then whale shit WP scum jumped on this rat shit like a fly on a pile of crap.
The rebuttal given by Hunter was next to none. He spoke in low tones, and hardly called the scum bag on any points other then re-iterating that we must stay the course, that a pre-mature pullout would be a big mistake.
We just don't seem to have anyone that is for staying the course that can get on these public waves and make a solid case in the style of like Zell Miller did at the Republican convention. We need some strong voices that make such a hard and compelling case to stay the course, that main stream Americans will start to write and call these goons in the beltway. Else the gig is up. It will be another NAM as the L/MSM have been carefully crafting over the air waves to come to past.

These yellow-belly Democrats and weak knee Republicans will cost the lives of thousand Americans. In the terrorist's eyes US withdrawal equals US defeat. That defeat will on serve to strengthen them.

They are fighting the Viet Nam war all over again, sadly the results of failure in this war (War on Terror) is the loss of our way of life, and the beginning of living in fear and isolation.
As for a thunderclap this Murtha guy has been singing this tired rap since this campaign was barely a year old.

Sunday, August 21, 2005 From James O'Toole, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "People understand the danger there," said Murtha, a Vietnam veteran. "They see the carnage and they feel they were misled.'' AND "There a 180-degree difference,'' said Murtha. "At first there was optimism ... but now people feel they were misled. When you lose public support, you're going have to start bringing the troops home.'' /// In a roll-call vote on 20 July 2005 to stay in Iraq, Murtha voted no. http://www.peacemajority.org/scorecard/scorecard.jsp?person_legislator_ID=262 /// From Ted Barrett CNN Washington Bureau Monday, May 10, 2004 Posted: 9:28 AM EDT (1328 GMT) "Rep. John Murtha, D-Pennsylvania, in a news conference with Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said the problems in Iraq are due to a "lack of planning" by Pentagon chiefs and "the direction has got be changed or it is unwinnable." /// OK, FReepers. Representative Murtha did indeed vote for the war, but he's been against it for some time. This is ALL about politics. The Dims are making Murtha a poster child for the cut and run crowd, and the MSM is again manipulating the truth. By strongly emphasizing Murtha's original support for the war and his military service, they are trying to make it sound like he's an expert who RECENTLY changed his mind. This is simply NOT true. Even if he's sat on defense-related committees and served in Vietnam, it does NOT mean he knows the strategy and tactics of desert combat in the year 2005. Also, Murtha has been against the war for some time (note the excerpts from articles above). Yet, the MSM is reporting this like it's recent news. The ONLY thing new here is Murtha had a press conference to state what he's been stating for MONTHS if not years. GRRRRR!

Very true AND they are probably going to end up getting hundreds of thousands of our Iraqi allies killed off. Can you imagine what will happen to anyone who has sided with America if the Iranian-backed Shias win control? Frankly, if I was a foreigner I would NEVER count on America again, because we cut and run. Don't believe me? How about Lebanon, Sudan, and Vietnam for starters.

Where is this so-called public uprising that is demanding a retreat from Iraq? It is all media driven just as they scripted.

You can translate this to mean "If the media is successful at painting Iraq as a disaster, they can bring the US to defeat." However, I don't think a Republican controlled congress would allow that. It isn't 1975 anymore, and the media has some competition now. They can no longer fool all of the people all of the time.

EJ Dionne is a symbol for how far left the msm is.
He is Howard Dean's water boy.
To: jmc1969
What debate EJ? You mean the debate between which lib posing as a journalist will spout anti-american propaganda on which day of the week?
Or which lib Hollywood propaganda show or movie will diss our troops?
Or which lib pretending to be a professor or teacher disses our CIC?
Or which lib Hollywood "comedian" insults and mocks the President of the US today?
Or which lib CIA traitor decides to leak a piece of intell to hurt the war effort?
Or which lib at the State Dept leaks to damage Bush's foreign policy?
Or which lib at the DOD leaks to damage our soldiers reputations. Or which lib staffer on the Senate Intell co leaks classified info to damage the US?
To: coffee260
It is all media driven just as they scripted.Bingo. It makes you realize what lemmings we were before the Internet allowed us to see how contrived all this crap is.
The media pimps and their whores drive the agendas.
