Iran in turmoil as president's purge deepens

The Guardian (UK)
Iran is facing political paralysis as its newly elected president purges government institutions, bringing accusations that he is undertaking a coup d'état. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's clearout of his opponents began last month but is more sweeping than previously understood and has reached almost every branch of government, the Guardian has learned. Dozens of deputy ministers have been sacked this month in several government departments, as well the heads of the state insurance and privatisation organisations. Last week, seven state bank presidents were dismissed in what an Iranian source described as "a coup d'état".

I share your concern that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is not the figurehead that so many in academia and on the Left had labeled him. We need to take what he says very seriously.

Precisely. Now.........one must wonder just how much more of this the already-restive populace will put up with.

The Iraqi people elected Saddam Hussein unanimously over the alternative, "kill me, rape my wife, and torture my entire family."

Sounds like the Mullahs are reconsidering having Ahmadinejad "elected." I bet if they had it to do over again Rafsanjani would be "elected" this time.
The media is a tool.
They really are a thing of beauty aren't they? The elections of Ahmadinejad and Chavez are instantly accepted as legitimate - no questions asked....meanwhile whenever a republican is elected dogcatcher somewhere we hear nothing but "voting irregularities."
To: dufekin
And we have to keep in mind that this guy probably wouldn't been selected *cough*, I mean, elected regardless of our deposing of Saddam Hussein. Iran's mullahs have been moving in this direction for a while now because they see their power base slipping. Afghanistan and Iraq have only worked to further reinforce the local democracy movement making the inevitable an immediate necessity.

Actually I fear FOR the Iranian people!
("....how much more of this the already-restive populace will put up with.....") No, what I fear is not whether there will be a bloody revolution, but instead whether this little madman, like Hitler or Stalin, will take his country down into the Abyss with him.
.............and the people will have nothing to say in the matter; all we will hear is the wailing of their suffering.

How are the libs going to spin this? Wait until Iran nukes Israel and then say 'oops!"

Good evening.
"This can only have a bad ending."
I disagree. The fool is creating the resistance movement that will bring his government down and we will be next door to support free Iran when the change comes.
At least we will be if no one listens to Murtha and the DemocRATs.

Don't agree. This is exactly the mistake we needed him to make. It may in the end bring down the whole regime.
Can't be any worse than it was previously, at least.

"....It may in the end bring down the whole regime...." In all truthfulness, I hope YOU are right, as opposed to my scenario (ie. a smoking ruin, ala Berlin, 1945).

"Guess we will have to wait till Iran actually drops a nuke just to convince DEMOCRATS about the intell."I'm actually beginning to see things in a different light recently. I think the Democrats are the puppets of the MSM, a new political party.
