Drug agents dismantle crystal meth factory: ‘Impressive’ Southie lab called Northeast’s largest

Agents began dismantling a massive Southie drug factory yesterday where MIT graduate Kevin McCormick was found dead after an apparent wild weekend sex romp gone wrong.

Police say they found hundreds of chemicals used to concoct club and date-rape drugs such as crystal methamphetamine and “Special K.”

“This is probably the largest (meth) lab we’ve seen in the Northeast in the past 10 years,” said an investigating agent from the Drug Enforcement Administration who refused to give his name. “This is not a small lab. This is not a mom and pop lab.”

Investigators found chemicals used to manufacture crystal meth, ecstasy and the date-rape drugs gamma hydroxy butyrate (GHB) and ketamine hydrochloride (“Special K”) in a storage area and lab that took up part of the second floor of the commercial building at 369 Congress St.

“These guys knew what they were doing. . . . It’s a very, very impressive lab in terms of what they were able to produce and how significant it is,” said the DEA agent.

McCormick, an engineering student turned high-tech artist whose work was featured at prominent shows such as Burning Man, was found dead after what police say was a drug-fueled sex bash. Those who knew McCormick described the MIT grad as a “friendly, supportive, nurturing, artist.”

“He’s really an amazing artist and innovator,” said MIT research scientist and art exhibit organizer Jonathan Bachrach. “He was very inspirational to a lot of people.”

Investigators believe five people were squatting in the nondescript building, which some neighbors described as “quiet.”

That changed Sunday when police found McCormick, 29, dead in a room called “The Dungeon.” He was wearing a mask and wetsuit-style body suit. Police have not identified McCormick as the dead man, but Bachrach said it was him.

A man whose employer rents space in the building described “group bondage parties” and other “weird (expletive).” He also said hamsters had been found in the basement.

Throughout the day, agents wearing protective gear worked in the building, at one point carrying out a plastic tub containing three or four rodents.

The discovery of the lab renewed fears that the crystal meth craze sweeping the West Coast and Midwest has reached the Hub.

“I hope we’re not coming to grips with that insidious drug. It just ruins everything,” said state Rep. Brian Wallace (D-South Boston).

Meth cooks buy nonprescription cold pills such as Sudafed, which contains pseudophedrine, a chemical derivative of amphetamine. The ingredient is combined with chemicals such as iodine and anhydrous ammonia, then cooked at a high temperature. When ingested, the drug produces a euphoric high.

Yesterday, state senators unanimously approved a bill that requires stores to lock up Sudafed tablets.

While less than 1 percent of the 103,000 people who sought substance abuse treatment from the state in the last fiscal year reported using crystal meth in the past month, the drug is growing in popularity among some gay men who search the Internet looking for sex parties where the drug is offered, state officials and counselors said.

It sounds like his MIT education was really "enlightened."

“He was very inspirational to a lot of people.”

Was that with, or without the hamsters and meth?

I wonder where in southie this is. I worked at a warehouse like building right next to the powerstation, and the owners kid had ecstasy parties in the basemnet on occasion on the weekends.
