B.B. Guns Becoming a Problem for Police
Updated: 8:12 AM Nov 17, 2005 NBC 15
Tuesday, a 13 year old Blackhawk Middle School student took a B.B. gun on to a Madison school bus. He shot three people with that gun. All three students had minor injuries.
Now, police say it's the latest in a series of serious events related to such a weapon.
Madison Police Chief Noble Wray says in the last few weeks there have been a growing number of BB gun incidents involving children.
It's illegal in the city of Madison for children under the age of 18 to have B.B. guns. And Wray says because they look so much like the real deal they could carry more serious consequences.
When you look at these it's real difficult to determine if it's real or not and then maybe having an officer or someone encounter that person, they could find themselves in a deadly force situation. That's cause for major concern, says Wray.
Chief Wray also says parents need to examine their child's behavior and question the intention if a child asks for a B.B. gun.
He wouldn't comment on the charges brought against the 13 year old student involved in yesterday's bus shooting.
Before the police in this country became Federalized, they had no problem distinguishing a BB gun from a .308 rifle. But since the public has become the enemy, they can't tell the difference.

"He shot three people with that gun. All three students had minor injuries. Now, police say it's the latest in a series of serious events "
They just criminalize a LARGE part of my childhood.
Being shot by and shooting others with a BB gun was considered a rite of passsge in my neighborhood.
Only sissises ever went home and cried to their mommies.
Ah the old put your eye out.
"Before the police in this country became Federalized, they had no problem distinguishing a BB gun from a .308 rifle. But since the public has become the enemy, they can't tell the difference."
That was before the main aim of police was to get themselves home without a scratch. There might be a 1 in 100 chance that the bb gun is a real gun but they won't take the chance.
I'm sure that you don't mean to make light of it, but my cousin was killed with a BB gun. :(
LOL can't make this stuff up. My whole generation was crimminal but the cops just hadn't caught on yet I guess......
Yeah, you've got to be kidding me. We had BB gun wars with the little one-pump Daisy guns when I was a kid. And I'm not that old...that was in the 80s.
Silly chief. Everyone knows that any child that asks for a BB gun wants to put someones eye out. Candy@sses like chief Wray were always the ones that lost the dirt clod wars, cork gun wars, and BB gun wars. He is lashing out because HE went crying to momma with the SuperAtomicWedgie, where you used a CubScout pocket knife to slit the waistband of his BVD's and put the waistband over his shoulders like suspenders.
On the other hand there really is a lot of mischief associated with them. A lot of poorly trained and raised kids out there.
We had some neighbors who had five red headed boys. I liked them but they were wild as Indians. I was not surprised when one of them put another's eye out with a BB gun.
Betcha these kids aren't using one-pumps anymore.
180fps vs 400fps is a whole lotta hurt's difference.
My brother and I gave up after I zinged one off his cheek. Luckily we didn't hurt each other any worse.
On the other hand, I did shoot the neighbor kid in the ... (sensitive area).
As a poster mentioned above, the CO2 powered (and multiple pump) bb guns available today are powerful enough to kill. Which means they aren't toys anymore.
Which is sad. Growing up, even after our incident, my brother and I had a great time just wandering around the farm, shooting things to hear the noises they'd make. (ping, clank, squawk, etc. :)
Nowadays, too many farms have been sold, and the big city, with big city cops is really no place to be messing around like that.
If you wanna shoot somebody, go play paintball...
Oh for gosh sakes, doesn't anybody have any common sense anymore?
Is there any Freeper who HASN'T been shot in the ass by a BB gun. It was de rigueur when we were kids so shoot each other with BB guns. Birds, windows, etc.
We used to take out BB guns to Scout meetings at the local church, lie in the bushes across the street from a gas station and shoot the giveaway dishes on display at the pumps.
It gets worse, we used to go camping and throw handfulls of .22 shells into to the campfire and then run and dive behind a tree or mound.
And today, I am a mature and responsible gun owner.
Very sorry to hear about your cousin. There is a major difference between a spring action Red Ryder, and a pnuematic pellet rifle. The first hurts, the second can and will kill. Airsofts are even sometimes called BB guns. There are 3 to 4 people killed each year by "BB guns". Sadly, there is a lot of misinformation and fear.
Man we used to have BB gun fights all the time when I was a kid.
We'd only shoot at democrats though...
"Candy@sses like chief Wray "
Chief Wray = mimi-me George Patton without the "gravitas"
bttt
I'll bet these are airsoft guns. They shoot plastic pellets at about 200-300fps. $17.00 at Walmart. Unless you take one in the eye, they are completely safe. Me and my boys (6 and 9)have regular wars with them. (yes, we wear eye protection)
Great tactical training. You can actually practice low light and moving target maneuvers.
Sorry, forgot to complete my thought.
They have absolutely no business in school or on a bus.
I don't know the details, but was told by my aunt that it was not a rifle type gun, but a pistol BB gun. He and his friend (they were 13 years old) were fighting over the gun, it went off, and it severed the artery in his heart. He pretty much died instantly. Horrible thing to have to live the rest of your life with the thought that you [accidentally] killed your best friend.
