New Cingular Service Puts Scrolling News Onto Phone Screens

Cingular Wireless and Motorola (MOT) Thursday are expected to unveil an always-on data service that will send scrolling text and images to the bottom of cell phone screens.

Cingular, operated by SBC Communications (SBC) and BellSouth, (BLS) will sell the service under the Live Ticker name.

The feature will work with a new phone from Motorola.

The move is part of a broader upgrade of Cingular's wireless portal — the screen that guides mobile phone users to entertainment and products. The company aims to make mobile Web browsing easier and quicker, and boost its revenue in the process.

The Live Ticker feature is seen as the latest incarnation of push technology, which was developed by PointCast in the 1990s for desktop computers. Though PointCast's technology fell out of favor, the idea could work well on cell phones, analysts say.

So, who is going to provide the MSM lies (er, news) to the telephone?

Live Ticker will initially offer about 10 content channels for subscribers. CNN, ESPN, E Online, the Weather Channel and Univision are providing the content.

The feature will work with a new phone from Motorola.

The V3X and V360 already support it.

That's great...now only if I can get a good signal and stop the dropped calls then it may be worth it.

Yeah me too, I am real happy when it just rings. This stuff is just useless cost. I wonder who actually knows how to use this without the manual.

Let's see, driving down the road, manual in one hand, cell phone in the other, wham -- hey what's that tree doing on the bumper.

Whatever happened to just having a regular cell phone? All of these add-ons are ruining the quality of reception.
