S.F. police chief says force understaffed-She wants to hire 250 recruits a year for the next 3 years

The San Francisco Police Department is running far short of its mandated force strength, and Chief Heather Fong said Wednesday she wants the city to hire 250 recruits a year for the next three years to shore up the dwindling ranks.

Police officials say the department has a total of 2,190 sworn officers but only 1,707 are available for field duty -- 264 short of the 1,971 that city voters set as a minimum in 1994.

The officers unavailable for field duty are either still in the academy undergoing recruit training, assigned to the airport or on disability.

"It's critical that we have an increase in the number of personnel," Fong said, pointing to a chart that shows how hiring has ebbed and flowed over the years as city budget problems have come and gone. "This pattern has to be brought to a more even keel."

Fong wants the city to hire and train five 50-officer recruit classes each year for the next three years. This budget year, she said, three classes are being trained. She hopes a fourth class can be hired.

"You can't fix a problem created over the last 30 to 40 years overnight," she said.

Gary Delagnes, head of the Police Officers Association, said the department has failed to plan ahead over the years, but instead has "cut corners" to placate city officials.

"It has left us very short in some very critical places," he said, citing shortages in stations from Richmond to Central districts. "It's going to get a lot worse -- we have more than 280 officers eligible to retire in the next two years."

. . . The department has said the shortage of inspectors is one reason police don't even attempt to investigate many violent crimes.

Why would anyone be a cop in a city that celebrates lawlessness?

Why does SF need more police? I thought it was a utopian society that had no crime... Pot is legal (almost), did they riot because the Doritos ran out?

Pelosi, did you fib to us again?

I was just there for the first time a few days ago. I would gladly sign up for the job of "Officer In Charge Of Nightsticking Bums Who Get Lippy."

Streets are filthy with useless ablebodied addicts.

Why not get a half million deputies for free, instead? Just encourage responsible gun ownership and watch crime plummet.

Just so long as they don't carry guns, or are ex-military.

Soo....why bother setting a minimum number if you aren't going to stick with it?

I think all the gun manufacturers should refuse to sell the SFPD any weapons or ammo.

I wonder if they'll recruit at high schools and colleges? Hmmm.

I thought Clinton raised taxes so that there would be another 20,000 cops on the streets in 10 years.

Once the honest citizens all turn in their handguns next year, under the new law, it should be a cakewalk for the cops. Heck, they can cut the force by half.
