November 17, 2005 -- CALL it "Deep Throat 2." The CIA-leak probe is in big trouble because superstar reporter and Watergate hero Bob Woodward has emerged as a surprise witness for the defense potentially undermining the case against ex-White House aide Scooter Libby.
Woodward yesterday revealed that he's told prosecutors he could be the first reporter to learn from a Bush administration source that Iraq war critic Joe Wilson's wife worked as a CIA analyst but Libby wasn't his new "Deep Throat."

Those were almost certainly calls to check on the validity of gossip information he had already received, and thus don't prove or support anything.
That's too black and white. You leave no room for the fact that his memory might be at fault -- it has been 2 years, you know.
If the reporter you are referring to is Woodward then your time line is off. Woodward wasnt told until mid June at the earliest and Libby had already been told about Wilson and Plame in late May/early June. Fitz timeline has at least three or four people telling Libby about Wilson & Plame before Woodward was told. How do you think the person telling Woodward found out? Libby asked both CIA and State for information on Wilson and why he was sent to Africa. He and & Cheney had both heard back from these sources by the time Woodward was told. It was pretty common knowledge at the White House. WHy? Because both Cheney and Libby had requested info on who is this Wilson and why was he sent to Africa.
Actually he said he didnt recall telling Libby. He thought it was unlikely because if he had he would recorded that on his interview notes but was it possible? Yes.
I disagree. Libby story was that this was widely known amoung reporters and he heard it from reporters first. This backs up that story. Now the only 'lie' is that Libby heard it from Woodward instead of Russert. Prosecuting someone for making that mistake during testimony would be beyond ridiculous.
Exactly right. Especially after that stupid press conference where he almost screamed that Libby was the FIRDT to know this stuff and pass it along.
Colin Bowel, George Tenet?
"Link me to some proof so I can put my rumor to rest."
ROFLMAO
May I borrow that as my new tagline and nominate you for the Freeper quote of the day?
I know he was brought up in an Republican household. He served as a naval officer. He was in Naval Intelligence. He was at one time an intelligence briefer for the General that became Nixon's final Chief of Staff and Reagan's Secretary of State. He's written a whole series of books complimentary to Bush and to Greenspan. He may be a RINO but I would buy him being a big government Republican more than a flaming liberal. His former partner, Bernstein, is a liberal except as it has to do with Catholicism.
Thank you -- you should have put that in bold -- exactly the reason I very seldom post on these threads but just read through them and talk to my computer!
That is absurd. Woodward didnt come out. The Bush administration official (Bush, Cheney, Powell, Tenant, Hadley) went to the special prosecutor and told Fitz that he had accidentlly mentioned Wilson/Plame to Woodward during an interview for Woodwards book on the run up to the war. Fitz then requested that Woodward testify. Its an administration official that outed himself.
Thanks to you and others, I stand corrected. Fitzy needs to series consider dropping the charges.
Please, get your facts straight. Woodward came out against the CIA leak investigation and said he thought Fitzgerald was on a witch hunt months ago on Larry King Live. The Bush Administration has been good to Woodward and has provided him with access to Cheney and all other Administration officials for three or four books that Woodward has already written on the Bush Administration. Bush, himself has set down with Woodward and given him three or four hour interviews. Woodward is now writing a book on Bush's second term, I doubt he wants to wants to jeopardize his access in a vain attempt to score another Watergate victory. He sat on his knowledge of who was leaking Plames name at the White House for several years and didnt even tell his Editor. I think you are wrong. Bernstein is the way out liberal. Woodward had Republican parents, was a navy officer, and was an intelligence briefer to the General that was Nixon's final chief of staff. He is likely a moderate but not a liberal.
Lying to a jury is different from having muddled memories. Lying must include intent. If he was lying, he must be held accountable. There is no room for wiggle in the case of perjury regardless of whose ox gets gored politically.
Perjury is a vile act that undermines all justice.
Woodward also said in his testimony that earlier he had told Pincus. Chances are he would have told Pincus when he was writing about Joe Wilson (I believe in his earlier articles he didn't specifically name Wilson but Pincus knew who he was and chances are Woodward did too, so this would be a month to two months before the June interview). This falls in line with what Andrea Mitchell said, and others have said as well. That is was common knowledge.
The reason that Woodward came forward and testified is because his source (not Rove or Libby) contacted Fitzgerald after the presser and told him. Fitzgerald then called Woodward in. Otherwise, he would have just sat silent....
Why is it so important to you that Libby be guilty of something?
On another thread yesterday, if I recall correctly, you identified yourself as a prosecutor. Well, this ordinary non-lawyer American thinks it stinks to high heaven that a prosecutor would begin investigating Charge A, discover that no crime was committed on that allegation, yet continue to play games with a Grand Jury in an attempt to entrap somebody for perjury, making false statements, obstruction of justice, etc.
If you are a wise prosecutor, you will understand the enormous credibility problem such cases create for prosecutors everywhere.
Libby might or might not be guilty of what Fitzgerald charged him with, but he is still entitled to his day in court. And he is still innocent until proven guilty. Or don't you prosecutors believe in that particular Constitutional protection?
Except that Woodward said he wasnt told by his administration source until mid June.
