November 17, 2005 -- CALL it "Deep Throat 2." The CIA-leak probe is in big trouble because superstar reporter and Watergate hero Bob Woodward has emerged as a surprise witness for the defense potentially undermining the case against ex-White House aide Scooter Libby.
Woodward yesterday revealed that he's told prosecutors he could be the first reporter to learn from a Bush administration source that Iraq war critic Joe Wilson's wife worked as a CIA analyst but Libby wasn't his new "Deep Throat."

Agreed. I don't know his motives. I worry though, because Woodward is the old media's main boy.
From what I've learned about him, he'll do mostly anything for one reason or another.
LOL. Yeh, and the old media and others kept saying how smart he was. I guess this makes him a smart*ss.
;-)
He certainly did. He looked like he just drank a gallon of high octane coffee. The guy is strange.
Yes, of course. A slick one.
I hate to tell you this but I have never heard of Christopher Wolf!! I never got that stranger on the street thingy either.
I think he needs to drop all charges and move to Canada!
Agreed.
LOL! Yep. It's that bad. Nobody knows what the heck is going on, but maybe that's not such a bad thing. There's been so much speculation on the part of the talking heads that everything is completely mucked up. I think we should just see what happens with the investigation. Fitzgerald is keeping his mouth shut, for the most part.
I have a feeling that Novak might just "risk it all" and "tell all" because he thinks it's wrong for Fitz to "silence him" because that is what it amounts to.
She was never charged or convicted of insider trading. Her broker who cooperated with the prosecutor was convicted of insider trading on her behalf.
For whatever reason, Novak is keeping his mouth shut too. Where has he been, anyway?
He was instructed to by Fitz. At some point however, I think he has a "right" to make his source known despite Fitz's "command". And I think the time is "soon".
He stepped forward now because a Bush Administration official went to Fitzgerald and said oh by the way I now recall I had a conversation with Bob Woodward in which I may have casually mentioned Wilson and his wife. As soon as the official contacted Fitzgerald, the prosecutor contacted Woodward. Woodward contacted his source to determine if he was free to talk. So far spokesmen for Bush, Card, Libby, Rove, Powell and Tenant all say it wasnt them. Unless someone is lying that leaves as likely suspects: Rumsfeld who Ive heard doesnt like Woodward, Cheney (who likely feels obligated to his Chief of Staff) and Hadley, the national security Chief. Since Libbys legal staff will be able to find out who it is, its likely it will leak to the press (unless perhaps its Cheney).
Actually it was that a Bush adminstration official failed to recall and report that he had discussed Wilson/Plame with Woodward. That person Im sure is under heat from the prosecutor at this point although I dont see much that he can do. Either that, or someone slyly kept this information secret in case Libby's "the reporters told me defense" didnt work. But honestly I dont think these folks are that smart.
Why soon?
Except Libby faces 30 years in prison. Prosecutor I heard didnt show any interest in a plea deal before the indictment, maybe he will now. But I think Libby has to offer up something more than he lied... and its quite possible that there is no one for him to give up.
"I think we should just see what happens with the investigation."
You keep saying that. But the investigation is OVER.
There is no more GJ. Fitzgerald might tie up some loose ends, but it's over.
I don't think Woodward came out with the story on his own. I recall that his source in the administration told Fitz that he told Woodward.
Woodward was outed by his source in the administration. At least that's my memory. Someone please correct me if I've got it wrong.
Pinz
He got testimony from Cheney, two CIA officials, one state department official that they told him. They have copies of faxes from CIA or State (cant remember which). They have Libby's own notes which show he was told by these various people.
They also have the testimony of Ari Fleischer and two other white house officals that they were involved in meetings with Libby discussing how to deal with Wilson and his wife. Ari Fleischer reported being told by Libby that Wilsons wife works at the CIA on WMD a week before Libby supposely learned this from Russert.
Russert flatly denies ever talking to Libby about Wilson and his wife. In fact, he says he didnt know that Wilson had a wife much less that she worked for the FBI until he read Novaks column. To a lesser extent the reporters Miller and Cooper dont support Libby's version of the truth.
Joe has assumed all along that all his Dem buddies are behind him 100% and everyone would remain either as "ambiguous witnesses" on his behalf or "true political friends". The wind has suddenly shifted.
