Are we ever gonna see a real conservative party? One with real conservatives that have nuevos?

Spineless GOP fears the Washington Post more than anything on earth.

The battle would not be in Congress but at the state legislatures. It would wake up a lot of conservatives as well as liberals, so the outcome is not a foregone conclusion.

On the other hand, most of the babies that would be saved would grow up to vote Democrat, which put that party where it is today.

The guy is absolutely correct. He sees the price to pay, and does not like it. And who could blame him?

How is he correct>

Tom Davis is a political guy. He is a conservative REPUBLICAN. He is stating POLITICAL assumptions to REPORTERS, and explaining voter dynamics. He is stating his opinions about how issues can affect local outcomes, and how that plays into the larger picture, of getting Republicans elected, both locally and nationally..

Since he is one of the biggest recruiters of CONSERVATIVE and CHRISTIAN candidates (who has the personality and "GRAVITAS" to open those dialogues), he is showing how the competition would frame the subject, to confuse those without steadfast priciples, and lure voters to the competition...

It seems that some people on this thread either don't much about know him, nor modern politics, or just have an issue with a word (abortion). Think about what he is saying, and think some more. Maybe you will figure out what he means. It isn't rocket science. It is the reality of the political landscape...

Your total lack of understanding of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is astounding.

There are a lot of people for whom abortion is a major issue. I decided long ago to not vote for anyone for any office unless they are willing to stand up and say abortion is murder, it is wrong, and most of all, there is NO protection in the US Constitution. I'm sure I am not alone. That is the political reality.

The only way there's gonna be a "backlash" is if the supposed GOP politicians keep cowtowing to the Left and Conservative issues DON'T get through.

Beltway Republicans have never really wanted Roe v. Wade overturned, it's been too reliable a fundraiser and vote getter for them to want to give it up.

"Abortion isn't just disgusting - it's murder, the taking of a life."

This is most interesting. Many liberals defend abortion on the grounds that it is the right of a women to choose. However, the taking of a life does not strike them as something problematic. The same liberals staunchly oppsoe the death penalty, although I believe the same morals should apply. Thus, if you can kill an unborn baby then it should be no problem of killing a sadistic killer in the electric chair.

However, many conservatives have the same problem. We should protect unborn babies as life is sacred. However, a sadistic killers life is obviously not sacred at all. Just fry him away. Here the conservative teachings is in conflict with each other.

True compassionate conservatism should protect all human life, both the unborn baby as well as the sadistic killer.

What is supposed to be the point in this guy, Davis, saying this publically. All it does is expose him on the right and on the left and totally leave him and those associated with him as neutered. All that in order to appear "savvy" to a bunch of reporters?!

It appears that this guy is not so much stupid as suffering from masochism. He wants to be made powerless and humiliated. If he does not realize this, he is stupid.

Sorry - I just can't equate a cold-blooded murderer with an unborn baby and I am surprised that anyone can make that connection. At least a killer gets a trial and has a chance. Not so for a baby whose mother is intent on killing him/her.

I recall this guy doing something to cross the president several months back. I don't remember what it was though.

The Bill of Rights does not grant rights. For example, look at the language of the 1st Amendment - "Congress shall pass no .....". The Bill of Rights prohibits all branches of the federal government from infringing the innate rights of the people.

He's a fairly moderate republican because of that.

"The Republican lawmaker who helped guide the GOP to an expanded majority in the House three years ago warned yesterday that a Supreme Court ruling overturning a woman's legal right to an abortion -- a possibility if the high court shifts further to the right -- could hurt his party's political prospects and cause a 'sea change' in suburban voting habits"

So? In this hypothetical situation, of the Supreme court overturns that decision, it's not as if changing the president or some senators will change that. The supremes are on the court for as long as they wish, and it's average age looks to be shifting down.

Overturning Roe v. Wade should sticks, despite some backlash.

What's more relvant is if the issue of abortion becomes a democratic desicion. If so, wouldn't the focus then be on legislatures, as opposed to liberals trying to stack the SCOTUS again?

"All these Republicans coming out against President Bush are a bunch of chickens who should be shown the door."

There is a conservative leadership vacumn in this group. Someone needs to kick them all in the jimmies and remind them that pols. have been acting conservative in order to get elected. So, there just might be a chance that the public likes conservative ideals.
