Up to 200 malnourished Iraqi detainees bearing signs of torture have been found in a secret prison in the basement of a Government building in Baghdad.
The discovery of the prisoners came after American troops surrounded and took control of an Interior Ministry building in the Jadriya neighbourhood of the capital on Sunday night.
When American forces arrived at the facility, officials there told them there were 40 detainees being held. As they moved through the building they discovered at least 200 prisoners, mostly Sunni Arabs and many in very poor health. The Americans had apparently been tipped off to the prisons existence by relatives of those being detained.
Official announcement of the discovery came just a day after damning United Nations report into the brutal conditions and lack of access to legal counsel in Iraqs overcrowded jails. The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq expressed concerns about the large number of detainees and suggested that Iraqi police and special forces had abused the human rights of suspects during security sweeps.
But the discovery of an apparently illegal detention centre has raised even more questions over the behaviour of the security forces being primed to take over duties from a withdrawing coalition force.

I can already hear it coming...........
bush did it.
Some folks are going to be sorry to see us go. The Kurds and Shiites have a lot of payback to do.
Yet another reason why we can't pack up and leave just yet - we haven't finished 'civilizing' them yet.
WEll... we certainly did not need this example of the new Iraqi military in action....... :-(
"I can already hear it coming...........
bush did it."
Thank goodness it was U.S. forces that did the discovery and not the U.N. or the Red Cross or Sunnis talking to Al Jazeera where the PR damage would have been much worse.
yeah.
if the sunnis had sense (a stretch) they'd be begging the U.S. to stay and protect instead of blowing us up w/roadside bombs.
if we leave early they're history.
NTSA, I hear ya...
I have always wondered what happened to all those captured terrorists.
Should we stay or should we go now?
If we go there will be trouble
And if we stay it will be double
So come on and let us know
Should we stay or should we go?
We're darned if we don't and darned if we do (by the press). I say we stick to the plan.
Give the liberal media time.
It'll be bush's fault by the end of the week.
Care to take any bets on it? :-P
A fool and his money are soon parted, and that's not directed at you. :)
ROFL
The prison is full of stacks of Living History.
They'll probably tie it in with his secret Iraq visit during Thanksgiving. He personally oversaw the operation and stuffed his face with turkey before the malnourished.
If I'm not mistaken, Iraq is now a free and independent country and can treat their prisoners any way they wish! They are not part of the U.N. and are not signatories to any U.N. BS.
So, what right has the U.S. to interfer in Iraqi prison policies?
"if the sunnis had sense (a stretch) they'd be begging the U.S. to stay and protect instead of blowing us up w/roadside bombs.

for that very reason hopefully this can be turned to our advantage and increase sunni involvement in the political process as the best way to protect their interests.
