Editor's note: The names in this story have been changed, but everything else is, unfortunately, true.
I've seen too many lives ruined by illegal immigration--the lives of illegal immigrants who work crappy jobs, suffer without insurance, sleep in apartments that would shock Jacob Riis, survive in a shadow society with little hope of escaping and drop out of college just to hear their employers and neighbors rail against Mexicans.
And I've seen the crosses and monuments along the jagged metal fence that separates Mexico from the United States, crosses and monuments dedicated to the hundreds of migrants who die each year trying to reach el otro lado.
So when I learned about Ezequiel Ureno, I vowed not to let him become another victim.

Easy solution: they should stop coming to our country. Then their lives won't be ruined.
So simple--yet why is it so hard for illegal alien lovers to understand it??
Don't have time to read this. Gotta go get my violin.
They'll understand it as they're being booked.
What bull. This writer is openly talking about committing a serious crime.
That's what I'm saying--is there anything prosecutable about this? Maybe revoke the writer's passport--or visa?
I can't understand why people can't change their own country?

I believe we should offer amnesty to these poor CRIMINAL INVADERS.
Give them 2 weeks to get the HE!! out of our country.
Bury the ones who don't honor this amnesty in jail or __.
Give huge fines and jail time to all of their aiders or abettors, private or government.
I once had an urge to smuggle an illegal immigrant back into mexico.
I live in Orange County and listen to this yahoo on Al Rantel's show on KABC radio. He does a segment called "Ask A Mexican". Last week, he was talking about how "patriotic" Mexicans are. Please, give me a break. I live here and know better. All they want is for us to provide for them. Try to take away subsidized programs from "hard-working" people and you'll hear, "Si, se puede!" and you'll see a riot. Gustavo also said on Al's show that Mexicans are more like Libertarians- they want little government involvement and want to keep their own money. Sure, they want to keep their own money. They just want EVERYONE ELSE to provide for them. I've said this a thousand times to my husband: If you really want to solve the illegal immigration problem, get rid of subsidized programs. Once they realize that they have to use that $10-$12/hr to feed, clothe, and house their own large families, this place will lose some of its attractions. My six year old son, nicknamed Jetfire, says that we should build a wall 100,000 ft. high. Hah!
Most Conservatives are only opposed to Illegal Immigration!
They risked their lives so muchfor what? To go to work in freaking hotels and yards? They just risked so much that it might not even be worth it at the end.
That's right Ezequiel, be sure to tell your friends.

(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
>>The United States-Mexico border has devolved into a deathtrap during the past decade: while 23 immigrants died trying to cross in 1994, at least 460 have perished in the past year.<<
How many died while how many million made it? Death trap?....... B.S!
I think the writer is elaborating a bit. I've never seen any quotes saying that coyotes are charging $6,000 to smuggle across a Mexican national.
The situation was getting desperate. Ezequiel, Gabriel and Lorenzo tried sneaking across the desert near Tecate shortly after their deportation, only to get caught by American immigration officers. Now they were looking to hire a coyote, Mexican slang for an immigrant smuggler. Asking price: $6,000. Each.
