Maureen Dowd just completed an interview on the Today show to flack her book, "Are Men Necessary?"
Not seeing Dowd much in the flesh, what struck me first and foremost was how depressed she seems. This is a sad woman. While her words have spark, her tone and body language are virtually inert. I'd guess she has a clinical diagnosis.
On the other hand, in a manner rarely seen in Today guests, Dowd dared to turn the table on her hosts. When Matt Lauer suggested that she had used her feminine charms to get ahead, referring to her as a "vixen," Dowd suggested that Lauer qualified himself as a male vixen, and suggested he might have done the same thing. Lauer predictably demurred.
When Matt later referred to the phenomenon in which smart and successful women have trouble attracting men, Dowd offered up Katie Couric as a counter-example. She asserted that Katie is a queen of snappy 1940s-style banter and repartee, yet "has tons of men chasing after her," or something to that effect.
In any case, Dowd's appearance was in itself a telling admission as to the state of modern post-feminism. Here she is, around 50, a palpably depressed woman, admittedly clueless about men and what it takes to be happy. Really rather sad.
Two-in-one day Today show ping.
Chronic alcohol abuse will do that to ya.
Did you by any chance catch the Dowd interview? Based on it or other occasions you've had to see her in [in]action I'd be curious about your thoughts on her low affect.
Won't MoDo just go - away that is!
(Queue the Mrs. Douglas photos -- we have rules)
Mo desperately needs a 12 step program, she is quite possibly an alcoholic/addict and could use the wonderful lessons these programs teach -- such as the one I relate above.
I thought I'd give another FReeper the pleasure of posting the obligatory Zeta-Jones shot.
LOL. In fairness, I gather Katie does have a rather active social life. I disagree with her politics, of course, but can understand her appeal.
Which is something we all can all be thankful for.
Thanks, asp. I get a twisted pleasure from reporting on the Today show's liberal antics.
Or even Catherine Zeta-Jones.
How in the world can you watch that show?
Yah, I knew that line was a softball just waiting to be knocked out of the park!
You are very astute about her needing a 12 step program. Maybe Al-anon?
She has gone out with men like Aaron Sorkin who had a drug addiction and Michael Douglas, who was treated for sex addiction.
She's 53.
Serious answer: don't think I could or would if I didn't have the outlet of the internet to vent my reactions.
Thanks for the factoid!
