German airline DBA orders 40 new Boeing 737 jets

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - German airline DBA said it had ordered 40 new 737 jets from US aircraft maker Boeing, with the first aircraft scheduled for delivery in 2008.

The 737-700 and 737-800 jets, to be delivered between 2008 and 2010, would enable DBA to become "the number one" on the domestic German market ahead of flag carrier Lufthansa, DBA said in a statement Monday.

The financial terms were not disclosed, but the list price of one new-generation 737 jet stands at 54 million dollars (46 million dollars).

At present, DBA currently operates a fleet of 29 leased 737 jets.

DBA said it had negotiated with both Boeing and its arch-rival Airbus for the contract. But the German airline finally chose Boeing because of the reliability of the 737, in particular on short-haul routes.

"Our pilots and technicians have enormous experience with this sort of aircraft and that know-how would be lost if we were to change our fleet," said DBA's supervisory board chief Hans Rudolf Woehrl.

In addition, switching to Airbus would require expensive re-training of pilots.

"Staying with Boeing will save us a lot of money, which we aim to pass on to our customers via fair prices," Woehrl said.

DBA was examining whether to finance the deal via a stock market flotation, Woehrl continued.

DBA is a former unit of British Airways, but was acquired by Woehrl in 2003 for a symbolic price of one euro.

Wow! What does that say about Airbust? What a slap in the Euro face.

I know. Slapped right in their backyard. Extra salt in the wounds. Love it.

Airbus planes these days are about as wanted as a case of diarrhea.

France's best technicians have been hijacked to design user-owned portable fire extinguishers designed specifically to use on burning cars.

It's going to slow down the processes incumbent in building an airliner.

Looks like Boeing might get over 1000 orders for planes this year.
This is turning out to be Boeing's best year so far in a long time.

I think it will be closer to 900...which is not too bad! I am looking forward to seeing the A380 be the biggest bust in modern aviation history. It will be soon be put into the same category as the Spruce Goose and Concorde. Can't wait!!!

Hopefully the launch of the 747 Advanced will be in a few weeks.
Some have written the 747 off and said that the 747 was on it's last days, but, when the new 747 advanced is built and put into service, we will see the ORIGINAL JUMBO jet for years to come.
I expect to see at least 200-300 747 advanced built, and maybe more because there is a huge market for the 747-400 replacement.

Dubai Airshow starts this weekend. I wonder if we'll get any good news out of that.

Interesting... the 737 is a very old aircraft design. I've been flying on them for about 15 years.

What's even more amazing, the article didn't once use that hideous term, "leverage." The French still have a decent sense of language, even though not of anything else.

I believe of the 50,000 or so Airbus employees, close to 20,000 are employed in Germany. There are some major manufacturing facilities in Hamburg and other German cities.

Nice win for Boeing.

So far all the news I'm reading on the Dudai Airshow talks only about the Airbus A380 and how it's stealing the show from Boeing.

I don't think so. What about the Worldliner and Dreamliner? No talk of the world's record for the 777-200 or the new 787? The record was broken just in time for the show! LOL

CAN YOU FEEL THE MOJO?
Boeing Shares up +.88 yesterday. Going to be a happy Christmas for a change for Boeing families in Puget Sound, after 4-years of worrying about tha massive lay-offs, and loosing sales to Airbus.

Wow! For a second there, I thought that maybe I needed to get my Data Base Administrator certification and move to Germany! They seem to be paying them pretty well! Then I read the first paragraph... 8-(
