SHANGHAI: Move over, New York. This year alone, Shanghai will complete towers with more space for living and working than there is in all the office buildings in New York City.
That is in a city that already has 4,000 skyscrapers, almost double the number in New York. And there are designs to build 1,000 more by the end of this decade.
China's real estate market is so hot that miniature cities are being created with artificial lakes, and the country's nouveau riche suddenly seem eager to put down as much as $5.3 million for a luxury apartment in skyscrapers with names like the Skyline Mansion.
For decades after the Communists took over in 1949, there was relatively little housing construction or office building under central planning. But since the early 90's, Shanghai and other cities have been making up for lost time.
And this year the building boom is at a frenzy, with the nation expected to lay down the finishing blocks on 4.7 billion square feet or more of construction, a record, up from 2 billion in 1998.

They also have more than 3x as many people.
Yet we have 10 times more capital than they do and we had 150 years head start.....
New York's skyscrapers have already been built..

Hong Kong's skyline.
Okay, so they are comparing an entire country of >1 billion people to a single city in the U.S.
Um, yeah, right, sure, uh huh.
Also, how many of those skyscrapers are in Hong Kong?
Yet we do not have the will to make the Freedom Tower have more than 70 floors. Where is our spirt that is uniquely American? Too bad not enough folks are listening to Donald Trump in New York.
but they are 2/3 as tall...
Mini me too"
Their skyscrapers are no bigger than a bread box.
There is no doubt that the majority of skyscrapers are in Hong Kong at this moment. However, that will not be the case any longer because the capitalism practiced in Hong Kong has now prevailed in the rest of the country.
So obviously, there is a huge construction boom in cities such as Shanghai, Shenzen, Beijing, just to name a few.
Big deal, I'd rather look at the tall oak in my woods!
Let's hope there isn't a major earthquake.
More sky scrapers, eh? I thought that pissing match was over about 20 yrs ago?

Skyscrapers 'sinking' Shanghai
"Parts of Shanghai are now sinking at a rate of one-and-a-half centimetres a year, largely as a result of a massive building boom there over the last 10 years."
I suspect if they don't stop, the place will look like New Orleans by century's end.
I wonder when will they be building levees to withstand CAT 5 storm to prevent the fiasco that we just witnessed in New Orleans?
LOL - Now tell us what you really think.
...and yet all of those magnificent buildings somehow got built.
