Soldier, 71, Called Back To Active Duty
The Associated Press ^ | November 11, 2005

Dr. Everett Spees, a cardiothoracic surgeon at several local hospitals who helped to develop the field of organ transplants, was a bit startled to find the Army calling, asking if he'd volunteer. A retired colonel, he'd offered his services on the day after Sept. 11, 2001, but no one called back for more than two years -- after the military was thoroughly embroiled in Iraq and needing more soldiers.

That's nothing. I've seen Marines recalled from the dead.

Says a lot about those in the 21st century who can not seem to fathom we still must fight barbarians and pirates to maintain our civilization.

Again I am humbled by the man in the article and his unending service to the nation.

God Bless America.

I stand against the AP/Enemedia war against our nation.

My dad served in a US Army medical unit during WW II with Dr. Charlie Mayo. Yes, THAT Mayo.

Stuff happens, Thanks. And no you are not..... I like your posts and respect your opinions.

I could have done a better job of making the point clear.

Have a great day

Very important point, those who have completed careers in the regular services are not retired in the civilian sense of the word. Their names are shifted from the Active List to the Retired List. But they stay in their service for life at reduced pay and are subject to recall in accordance with the needs of the service.

The same is true of retired reservists, whether eligible for retired pay or not. I've got a nicely framed (by me of course) certificate documenting my transfer to the Retired Reserve, United States Air Force, just to my right as I type this. It's dated a bit over 13 years ago. On my left is my commision.

It has been noted to me on another blog that the great majority of reporters seem to have never been in the military, and unless they have spent a long time reporting on the military's internal workings (as opposed to reporting on the war), they make mistakes like this all the time.

Thanks for the info. I figured the Reserves worked in the same fashion but never knew.

I salute you sir, for you service!

Firstly, you do not see very many much younger MDs volunteering for such duty. The most are far to selfish to feel that perhaps they might GIVE something back to their country.

I know of several hundred (my daughter included) that are doing just that.

It is very heartwarming to read of such an unselfish man who loves his country so deeply. He is a real contrast to the selfish parasites on Wall St. and the Chicago Board of Trade, whose purpose in life is to speculate on oil and natural gas futures so that prices for their less-fortunate fellow-citizens go through the roof. I'd much rather be in the good doctor's shoes when we must all appear before the Judgement throne of God.
