Dr. Everett Spees, a cardiothoracic surgeon at several local hospitals who helped to develop the field of organ transplants, was a bit startled to find the Army calling, asking if he'd volunteer. A retired colonel, he'd offered his services on the day after Sept. 11, 2001, but no one called back for more than two years -- after the military was thoroughly embroiled in Iraq and needing more soldiers.

That's nothing. I've seen Marines recalled from the dead.
Says a lot about our 20-40 year olds don't you think?
Again I am humbled by the man in the article and his unending service to the nation.
God Bless America.
I stand against the AP/Enemedia war against our nation.

My dad served in a US Army medical unit during WW II with Dr. Charlie Mayo. Yes, THAT Mayo.
VERY cool!!
My apologies for missing your initial point. Obviously I am the one full of shiite.
Stuff happens, Thanks. And no you are not..... I like your posts and respect your opinions.
I could have done a better job of making the point clear.
Have a great day
:-)
Great story, thanks!
The same is true of retired reservists, whether eligible for retired pay or not. I've got a nicely framed (by me of course) certificate documenting my transfer to the Retired Reserve, United States Air Force, just to my right as I type this. It's dated a bit over 13 years ago. On my left is my commision.
It has been noted to me on another blog that the great majority of reporters seem to have never been in the military, and unless they have spent a long time reporting on the military's internal workings (as opposed to reporting on the war), they make mistakes like this all the time.
Thanks for the info. I figured the Reserves worked in the same fashion but never knew.
I salute you sir, for you service!
I know of several hundred (my daughter included) that are doing just that.
Hey, that's my ancestors you're talking about!
It is very heartwarming to read of such an unselfish man who loves his country so deeply. He is a real contrast to the selfish parasites on Wall St. and the Chicago Board of Trade, whose purpose in life is to speculate on oil and natural gas futures so that prices for their less-fortunate fellow-citizens go through the roof. I'd much rather be in the good doctor's shoes when we must all appear before the Judgement throne of God.
Several hundred young MDS that haved volunteered???? Odd that military mentions nothing about this.
