Scholars look between lines for Bible's abortion stance

Flip to the back of any of the fancy, leather-bound Bibles that are so common in evangelical churches these days, and chances are there is an index. Called a concordance, it offers a list of specific words mentioned in the Bible and where they are referenced in the text. Those who turn to their concordance for guidance about abortion will not find the word at all.

"I can't take you to text that says, 'Don't commit abortion,"' said Michael Gorman, a professor of New Testament and early church history and dean of the Ecumenical Institute of Theology at St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore. "It just doesn't exist."

Gorman, who calls himself an evangelical, cites the early church's opposition to abortion and broader themes that suffuse the Scriptures, rather than specific verses: "There's an impetus in the Bible toward the protection of the innocent, protection for the weak, respect for life, respect for God's creation."

One anti-abortion group, Michigan Christians for Life, sells bumper stickers with "Deuteronomy 30:19."

The verse reads: "This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him."

But some evangelical scholars say the passage has nothing to do with abortion. Instead, it is an exhortation to the Israelites to obey God's word, said John Goldingay, a professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary, outside of Los Angeles.

"We're always trying to work out legal implications from them, as if they were a legal kind of text, like interpreting a constitutional document," Goldingay said. "The problem is that wasn't what they were designed to do."

The apostles were the closest to Jesus and their beliefs most closely reflect his teaching. Read the Didache.

The Lord's Teaching to the Heathen by the Twelve Apostles: 1 There are two ways, one of life and one of death; and between the two ways there is a great difference. 2 Now, this is the way of life:… The second commandment of the Teaching: "Do not murder; do not commit adultery"; do not corrupt boys; do not fornicate; "do not steal"; do not practice magic; do not go in for sorcery; do not murder a child by abortion or kill a newborn infant. "Do not covet your neighbor's property; do not commit perjury; do not bear false witness"; do not slander; do not bear grudges. Do not be double-minded or double-tongued, for a double tongue is "a deadly snare." Your words shall not be dishonest or hollow, but substantiated by action. Do not be greedy or extortionate or hypocritical or malicious or arrogant. Do not plot against your neighbor. Do not hate anybody; but reprove some, pray for others, and still others love more than your own life.

From the Didache.

I have forgotten where it is located but in the Old Testement it says something to this effect, "He who casues an unborn child to die shall be stoned".

I do not think it is referring to getting high on pot.

Arguing that the Bible, must state a specific prohibition
against something, for it to be wrong, is a very weird way to look at things.

It's interesting that they are seeking for approval. They aren't going to find it in the Bible though. If people knew what they were doing was right, this desperate searching wouldn't be happening.

You don't even need a Bible to know that killing innocent, defenseless little babies in their mothers' wombs is wrong. How about common sense? How about common decency? When I was an atheist I didn't believe in abortion. I didn't need a Bible to tell me it was wrong.

"I can't take you to text that says, 'Don't commit abortion,"

Knowing how the Law of Moses regarded the unborn is a beginning of that knowledge.

Exodus Ch.21:22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

Are they coming out with a New York Times translation of the
Bible? Guess they have to do something to make money since
they're having trouble selling newspapers.

"Combat evil with apathy. Good strategy."

He has a point, though. Jesus said of the corrupt teachers of his time "Leave them. They are blind guides."

The mistake is to be drawn into a dialogue with dishonest people. If one submits to God and soaks in the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit makes clear abortion is sin, it emanates from the whole of God's truth.

Yeah, but you also probably didn't have an old girlfriend in the seventies you try very hard not to think about, much less the child the two of you might have had if she hadn't had the problem "taken care of."

Whoever makes one of these little one sins....

Abortion is making kids sin, end of the line

Also, Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's....should tell a lot about these selfish b@st@rds that Caesar can choose to free a child if he finds it fit for him and a Republic not giving up as a principle.

Probably because I'm a woman. :-)

"Thou shalt not kill."

It doesn't get any plainer than that.

I didn't need a Bible to tell me it was wrong.

Same here. Back in the 70's, my ex tried to get me to abort my babies. (it inconvenienced his plans) I knew in my knower... it wasn't right.....tho I was young and non-Christian at the time. The thought of abortion ...just horrified me.

"I can't take you to text that says, 'Don't commit abortion,"'

if God is Love and love does not fail....it's eternal.

how is ripping a living baby from the womb, loving ?

since when is murder, loving

since when is selfishness, loving ?

Heaven is a holy place....we dont get there by being un-holy people

Only the Godless would make such a stupid statement as this demon
