I'm buying some Playstation 2 games for the troops in Iraq. I know nothing about which ones are good.
Anyone who has played these games, please give advice on what to avoid and what to get.

Hello, surfer dude!
I'm just about to send you a couple pictures of certificates for web hosting that we got with flags last year.
FReepmail.
Splinter Cell is great, and any GTA (Grand Theft Auto) is a good way to blow off steam.
My advice would be to focus on any game that has multiplayer capability. Gaming is great, but gaming with a buddy is infinitely more fun.
Some of the posters suggested the new Star Wars: Battlefront 2. That's good, but expensive. The original Star Wars: Battlefront can be picked up new for $19.99, or be found for much less used or on ebay. It's a solid game that still stands up even with the upgrade-heavy sequel being available(The Hoth battle in BF1 is far better than the one in BF2, imo). It's one of the best and cheapest ways to live the Star Wars movies. You can fly and pilot most of the vehicles from the flicks. Plus it has 2 player co-operative or versus play.
I saw a Lord of the Rings title in your list, but I believe that's the sub-average role-playing game version. Any version of Baldur's Gate, which is on your list, will be immensely more enjoyable than that. Plus it supports two player co-operative play.
For a Lord of the Rings game, your best bet is The Return of the King by EA. It's an action hack-and-slash game that supports two player co-operative play and pretty closely follows the movies. It looks really sharp for a ps2 game to boot. It's technically an older game now, so you should be able to pick it up for a song. The prequel game, The Two Towers, is also a solid game, but doesn't support two players. Again, both titles like Star Wars: Battlefront are excellent movie escapism.
Sport games are usually a safe choice. I also tend to agree with the poster that suggested that Socom-like games may not be a good idea since they're basically living that already.
Thanks for your excellent suggestions.
I've bookmarked this thread so I can go back and glean advice for the next time I buy games.
Thanks for the advice. I've bookmarked this thread to go back and get ideas for future gifts to them.
Picture reminds me of Terminator 2 when Arnold picks of the huge automatic and Linda says, "It's definitely you."
