Appearing on Lou Dobbs Tonight, Congressman Curt Weldon charged Lou, this is a cover-up. Its not a third-rate political burglary. Its a cover-up of information on the largest attack in the history of the country. Congressman Weldon was speaking of Able Danger and the information he says Able Danger collected but was not allowed to present to the 9/11 Commission.
Able Danger was a relatively small data-mining operation that ended in 2000. One of its members, LTC Anthony Shaffer went public, saying that his group had collected information that identified Al-Qaeda terrorists in several places in this country before the 9/11 attacks. The implication is that if this information had been used properly, the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington could have been thwarted. LTC Shaffer further related that the members of Able Danger were ready to testify before the 9/11 Commission, but were never called. In fact, Able Danger was never mentioned in the final 9/11 Commission Report. In a previous interview Congressman Weldon said that we need to know about a massive amount of data being destroyed. We need to know who destroyed 2.5 terabytes of data. Weldon says he was curious as to how much data that actually was, so he contacted the Library of Congress, the largest library in the world. He said he was told that its equal to ¼ of all the printed material that the Library of Congress has in its collection. This massive amount of material about the largest and most aggressive international terrorist organization in the world was destroyed. Special Forces General Lambert was never consulted before the data was destroyed and was livid when he found out that his data had been deleted, according to Congressman Weldon.

When Nixon lied, no one died!!!
Scary stuff....
God I hope this gets legs. What will it take?
The average person has NO clue about Able Danger.
OK, first we indict Bill Clinton...
1. There is no "there" there. The Able Danger information is either not as potentially explosive as Congressman Weldon believes it is, or too much of it has already been consigned to the shredders (for whatever reason, political or procedural) to constitute "proof" of anything. 2. "The Republicans are withholding the Able Danger information because all the politicians in Washington are 'good old boys and girls' who watch each others' backsides" (AKA: the Rush Limbaugh theory). 3. Key Republicans are "sitting on" the (presumably explosive) information until a more politically propitious time (e.g. a 2006 election "October Surprise"). 4. While some of the "Able Danger" testimony/ evidence might prove embarrassing to the Clinton Administration in the same sense that the National Security Briefing entitled "Al Qaeda Still Intends to Strike the US" was embarrassing to Condi Rice and the Bush Administration, there is no clear cut "smoking gun" to Bill Clinton's office (that can't be knocked down by the MSM). 5. There is substance to the "Able Danger" information, but it is a "two-edged" sword that could bite back at the Bush Administration (e.g. Bush Administration figures may have been briefed about "Able Danger" findings prior to 9/11). 6. The Bush Administration may view the "Able Danger" information as falling under the heading of "not yet releasable/declassifiable", or they may see releasing "Able Danger" information as a matter of "executive privilege".
If anyone else has other ideas along to explain why most Republicans aren't ready to jump on the Representative Weldon bandwagon, I'd like to hear them.
Is DU empty tonight or have you just too much time on your hands?
Essentially, what do you think this article is saying then?
because stories about government failures, aren't as likely to hurt the political party that caused the failure as they are to hurt the political party currently in control.
It seems as though this would be an excellent time to open an investigation into Able Danger and those responsible.

I think Able Danger posed a threat that cross into political parties (both Republican and Democrat). Based on the type of analysis being done...these intel guys could see cash flowing in and out of the country...not only from terrorists, but also special interest groups. Both political parties are being paid millions on the side...to support their political campaigns and ambitions...and they have little choice but to take money from Taiwan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and anyone else who needs favor done. This is likely the chief reason to close down the operation. Finding data on terrorists wouldn't be a trigger...but finding any politican with corrupt cash would be a major trigger. And this is the main reason why you don't see politicans rushing to assemble the team today (look around...you don't see any Senator or congressman asking them to do it). There is a reason for that. And its not terrorism.
I have to say that this "other than terrorism" explanation hadn't crossed my mind. I also have to say that I hadn't heard or read that LTC Shaffer or any of the other "Able Danger" principles had advanced this theory.
Able Danger saw every financial transaction that came into the country...Shaffer will admit that part easily. Then ask just how far this financial analysis could go...and my guess is that Shaffer will answer "anywhere".
Go out to Yahoo and type in Don Johnson and the German investigation. Don Johnson, our favorite Miami Vice character...was caught a couple of years ago coming into Germany and about to head into Switzerland...in a large private limo...and lots of bank documents (into the billions supposedly). He was simply a VIP type who a number of businessmen thought would be a good courier, and bring these documents out of the US and deposit them into a Swiss bank. The Germans sat there and started putting alot of info together on the connections involved. Don was finally allowed to leave....but his courier service terminated at that point. There are billions moved in and out of the US every year...illegally. Able Danger would really start to tell alot about our corruption in government and the business sector....simply by noting the money trail.
