Time for a Culling of the Caucus?

Congressman David Reichert. Congressman Charles Bass. Congressman Michael Castle. Congressman Sherwood Boehlert.

All four are quoted in today's accounts of yesterday's House meltdown on the budget and ANWR exploration. I won't presume that any member who is alleged to have been for stripping ANWR exploration from the budget bill actually was on the side of energy dependence of Middle Eastern and Hug Chavez, but their names will eventually come out. Opposition to ANWR exploration is a fundamentally disqualifiying position for a party that

With the budget deficit at 2.4% of GDP, getting a budget vote wrong is not the occasion for denunciation.

But getting ANWR wrong is.

ANWR is a national security issue. In a time of war, the actual production from ANWR is not as improtant as taking the steps necessary to get the oil to a position where it would be available to us if we were to need it because of supply disruption or, worse, a catastrophic attack on our facilities for importing oil.

Stand-by production potential is as necessary to the economic health and defense capability of the United States at least as important to the national security as any other element in aour national defense. It is just not obviously so. Congressmen are supposed to have the intellect to get beyond the obvious.

If the effort to open ANWR fails, the Republican Congressmen who deserted the GOP on this issue don't deserve a return ticket back to the Congress. Freshman Rep. David Reichert appears to be the most vulnerable of those who are on record as opposing ANWR exploration. Who's his Democratic opponent?

Sad but true: If ANWR doesn't get out of the Congress, the GOP will have to do some housecleaning. When it comes to issues, there's national security and there's judges. Everything else is a distant third. These are the defining issues of our time, and being serious about national security and the judiciary defines the GOP.

There's got to be an edge to the big tent.

I want to anticipate one thing: If ANWR exploration does make it out of the Congress, I don't care if some GOPers voted against it. Realists understand the concept of a "free vote," and don't resent the party leadership managing to a majority.

But if it fails, it would be a very good thing to see some ANWR opponents tossed out in the primaries of '06, or even the general.

I tried to watch it but as soon as Colmes came on I got nauseous and had to turn the channel...

And I can guarantee I am not the only one who does that...

Heard about these clymers on Rush today.

To everyone--you need to listen to the first half hour of the second hour of the show. It's one the best ever--apparently Soros is funding some of these RINOs.

The way this Charlie Bass guy was acting...he reminded me of the Dems...so he probably is one of the ones that Soros is paying...

He was saying that we shouldn't drill in ANWR, but it is okay to drill in the lower 48...where???

Also...he said his MAIN reason for voting against the bill was because ANWR doesn't belong in the budget bill...

BUT, the reason it was in the Budget Bill is because it couldn't be passed in the Senate any other way...

HE said that we should blame the Senators then...and not the House members...

He was a typical politician...blaming everyone but himself...and giving stupid reasons for what he does..

He has to have been paid off.

Then we need to work to get rid of him and anyone else who has been disloyal. This IS a national security issue, and anyone who is too dumb to understand that doesn't belong in congress.

Exactly....I think that considering how instrumental all Americans were...not just South Dakotans...in defeating Tom Daschle...

it is conceivable...that all Senate and House races will becomes somewhat of a national election...we at Free Republic need to keep a log of RINOS and where they are from, so we can help a good, qualified challenger in 2006.

I called Castle's DC office, got his voicemail, but guess what? His mailbox was full... what a surprise. So I called one of his Delaware offices, and really gave it to the poor young woman who answered the phone.

The thing that was so amazing about Bass (who spoke over everyone like a typical libturd!) was here is a guy from NH of all places where we spend about $3500 a year of after tax income on heating our homes telling us that this nowhere is a "refuge". It was decided 35 years ago to "protect" this area and blah blah blah. I hope his constituents were watching tonight as it is below freezing here !

That is what I was thinking yesterday when I heard about this group of GOP House members...

All we have heard for months now...is the high cost of fuel..and how heating oil..and such is going to be so high..and you have congresscritters already asking for federal help to pay for people's heating bills this winter...

BUT, they can just flick off the ONE piece of legislation that even speaks to our long term gas needs...

IF I had a congressidiot that joined that group...I do believe that I would be sending him my heating bill this winter....and get the rest of his constituents to do the same.
