President Bush's administration has threatened to sue Southern Illinois University, alleging its fellowship programs for minority and female students violate federal civil rights laws by discriminating against whites, men and others.
In a move Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said "just doesn't make sense," the U.S. Justice Department charged that three SIU programs that aim to increase minority enrollment in graduate school exclude whites, other minorities and males, in violation of Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act.
"The University has engaged in a pattern or practice of intentional discrimination against whites, non-preferred minorities and males,'' says a Justice Department letter sent to the university last week and obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Any unbiased writer would start off with "The US Justice Department...."
Starting off with "The Bush administration..." gives the game away much too soon. Save the propagandizing for deeper in the story, unless you're preaching to the converted, which these yobs seem to think they are.

Straight out of college, I answered an entry level job ad that asked for minorities only.
I went to the interview and told them that I was hispanic. They looked a me for a few minutes then debated amongst themselves for a moment and they said that I wasn't. They said I should leave.
That was discrimination, early 80's style.

Folks have given up on the alternative of telling them they're "gay". All too often that ends up with a suggestion for a hookup.

I believe there's a German proverb something like:
Man ist was er isst (You are what you eat).*
So, if you had eaten Mexican food recently, you could claim to be Hispanic.
*(The headhunter's version goes: Man ist wen er isst.)

It's about time that discrimination is wiped out and priority treatment towards anyone on the basis of color or sex be just as wiped out.
We should all be judged on our merit, character and experience.
Imagine that!

If the Bush admin were serious about ending racial discrimination, it could start with the policies of the federal government itself. If you are bidding for gov't business and there is
any minority* or female-owned business competing with you, it doesn't matter what your bid is, you will lose.
*The term "minority" means for government purposes any person who is not a white male Christian, excepting only Jews for some reason which nobody will give.

In 1976 I was told by a corporate recruiter that if I was a woman or black or better yet a black woman he could get me an interview with all the top Fortune 500 Companies, but as a white male he would do the best he could do, but don't expect much because the companies had all those the could use. Based on the job interviews he sent me on he wasn't kidding.

Didn't we try this a while ago and lost the court case? I'm all for trying again, but this sound oddly familar. Sounds like a repeat.

Michigan it was a mixed bag. We lost the case that charged law school admissions in violation because the supreme court held that race could be used so long as it was not the sole condition. IE. It had to be one of many contributing factors to the decision. We won against the larger admission practice of reserving X number of seats for blacks because that was the sole requirement.
This case argues based on, among other things, this recent ruling. Theorizing that if its wrong to be the sole factor in awarding enrollment it should also apply to $$.
Assuming the court doesn't reverse its recent ruling there is an above average chance that the administration will prevail.
