'Jarhead': Whose Stories Are They?
New Pork Slimes(NYT) ^ | 11-9-05 | DAVID CARR

Joel Turnipseed, a former marine who wrote "Baghdad Express," a memoir of the first gulf war, was sitting in Minneapolis

watching "Monday Night Football" with his wife last week when a commercial for the film "Jarhead" came on the television.

"Jarhead" was directed by Sam Mendes and is based on Anthony Swofford's memoir of the first gulf war. The commercial showed

marines in the desert hurrying to don their chemical protection gear. One of the characters, Troy, played by Peter Sarsgaard,

put on his hood and turned to another, Swoff, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and in his best Darth Vader voice invited him to

"come to the dark side."

Mr. Turnipseed said he was shocked. "I turned to my wife and said, 'Honey, there is something funny about that,' " he said in

a phone interview. "That scene is in my book, not Tony's," he added, referring to Mr. Swofford.

From New York Times, though I did not have to register to view. Possible lawsuit, it looks like to me.

Just a leader, you have to register now.
Saw some other hints there were problems
with the origins of this flick.

Apparently, there is a scene where our troops, in full gear, are playing football in 112 degree heat. Nice touch of realism, there.

Has anyone here seen "Jarhead"? The TV ads looked pretty good to me. But I've heard descriptions of the movie from others that make me shy away from it.

It was one of those unintentional coincidences that is frustrating for him...

Yeah, that's it. You know, I wrote a song called "Stairway to Paradise", but some guy named Robert Plant stole it.

I have not seen it and based upon the pieces written about it by Col. North and another Marine out of Co. I don't think I will.

I saw it. it was ok. nothing fabulous.good cinematography.
the "stolen" line is about as original as someone saying "DOH!" to imitate Homer Simpson . anyone having ever worn a gas or had to drill for NBC attacks has said that line.

Talked to someone who saw it. He said it was trash. He cited cynicism, god-awful language and homosexuality. Sounds like a winner, eh?

Yeah, Mr. Turnipseed had deja vu over that scene along with about 2 million other service members who have done and said the same thing. Sounds like grounds for a lawsuit. NOT!

"Jarhead" is directed by Sam Mendes, who directed the gay-themed movie "American Beauty"

I've seen it. I was only lukewarm on the movie. There was no real story or adventure to it.

The entire movie is summed up as follows: "Code Red - Desert Shield, Desert Storm, wait, think of things to do, get into trouble out of sheer boredom.............oh, it's over - damn, I never fired a shot."

It really dragged since there was no real story line to it. Although it did have it's amusing parts & lighthearted parts, there were plenty of dark scenes that could be disturbing to some folks. And, of course, the language was typical for Marines (used to it - my brother was a Marine).

Just saw it. Though I was in the Army, the Marines are not a bunch of fags like it was shown in this movie.

All that homo crap just creeps me out. Hollyweird just can't seem to understand that martial bonds do not imply a wish for marital bonds.
