Dan Rather called the, then anonymous, Burkett an "unimpeachable source".
That's what passes for truth and ethics at CBS News.
This is so stupid I have trouble believing anyone said it.
But them Limbaugh was quoting someone today saying what a great American ally Saddam was, and how much better off we were with him.
The loons have started to notice we have won the war, and are trying to rewrite history. Joe and Adolph weren't so bad either. Think how much better off we'd be if we'd let Hitler finish the job.
Amazing.

WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL
Mary Mapes
Truth and Duty
For twenty-five years, Mary Mapes has been an award-winning television producer and reporterthe last fifteen years with CBS News, principally for "The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" and "60 Minutes." Following the broadcast of Dan Rather's story on George W. Bush's National Guard Service, Ms. Mapes was fired, Dan Rather stepped down from his anchor chair a year early, and an unprecedented "internal" inquiry into the story occurred. In her new book, Truth and Duty, Mary Mapes talks for the first time about the behind-the-scenes action at CBS during this period and exposes: new details on President Bush's Guard career, the connection between a controversial news story and a corporation under fire from the federal government, an emergence of "digital McCarthyism" as conservative bloggers manipulate the internet, and how news organizations are collapsing under political-and commercial-pressures.
Please note: This event will take place at the World Affairs Council, located at 312 Sutter Street, 2nd Floor. Check in is at 5:30 pm. Admission is free for members, $5 for students, and $15 for non-members. For reservations and more information, please call 415-293-4600.
I remember that.
On the other hand, it did find that Mapes knew that, contrary to her report, George W. Bush offered to go to Vietnam while in the National Guard unit. This was a critical fact, undermining the entire premise of the CBS News story that Bush went into the National Guard to avoid Vietnam.
She was on O'Reilly tonight, still insinuating that George Bush joined the TANG to avoid Vietnam and saying straight out that he got "preferential treatment."
I did not receive the marching orders from Rove. What, am I chopped liver now?
In the delusional alternate universe the Left inhabits, something is true simply if they believe it to be so, want it to be so, and it furthers their agenda. In their warped minds, the onus is on us to prove they are lying. But even when it's been proven that they lied, the proof doesn't matter to them at all, and they continue to lie blatantly and pathologically.
I used to think that liberals lied knowing they were lying. But it's become more than obvious that they truly believe their own lies. They have lied for so long about so many things that it has become as natural to them as breathing. And they have invested so much effort in lying that lies have become their reality. Lies have become the very fabric of their being, and they are incapable of telling the truth. Their consciences, as the Bible says, have been seared with a hot iron.
I love the title of this thread.
"...can only diminish the reputation of journalism even more."
I would suggest this is not "journalism" whatsoever.
The left never has proof of anything. It's their MO. She still has a large following though. Hey, if ya want 2+2 to equal 5, who am I to argue.
Jim, apparently CBS News is sending the following to tv personalites before they interview Mapes about her book.
The CBS News response to her appearance on GMA: This was apparently sent by CBS to Larry King yesterday, and he read it before he interviewed Mapes. Apparently O'Reilly got the same response from CBS News before Mapes was on his show.
"(After yesterday's Mapes' Good Morning America appearance, CBS issued the following statement, which Larry King read to Mapes last night):
"KING: We're here with Mary Mapes, the book "Truth and Duty, the Press, the President and the Privilege of Power." CBS News gave us this statement today.
"Mary Mapes' actions damaged CBS News as an organizational and brought pain to many colleagues with whom she worked. Her disregard for journalistic standards -- and for her colleagues -- comes through loud and clear in her interviews and in the book that attempts to rewrite the history of this complex and sad affair.
As always, revisionist history must be tested against the facts. Not only are those facts contained in the extensive media coverage that took place at the time, but also in the 200-plus-page report of the independent panel which investigated the matter for more than three months.
We believe those facts speak for themselves. The idea that a news organization would not need to authenticate such important source material is only one of the troubling and erroneous statement in her account."
(Mapes only reply was: CBS has been working on that statement for months.)

Dumbest Q&A Award. (Nov. 10)
Bill O'Reilly: Are you a Conservative or liberal?
Mary Mapes: I don't know.
I caught Mapes last night on the O'Reilly factor, and I was amazed at how sure she is that this story is true, that she was sure that her "evidence" was good, and how she worked for 4 years on the story. Not a good thing in a reporter.
It really puts into perspective just how much the left hates President Bush, and how they are driven to try to destroy him. It's become a religious crusade to many, like Mapes.
Mark
But so is the MSM... and that's the bigger problem.
She made a huge ass of herself on O'reilly, although he didn't have the guts to call her a lying RAT hack.
One would've hoped that Pravda had folded when the Soviet Union disintegrated, but its American affiliate, CBS, lives on.
