Dan Rather's Disgraced Cohort On Book Tour
Accuarcy in Media (AIM) ^ | November 10, 2005 | By Cliff Kincaid and Roger Aronoff

Posted on 11/10/2005 9:36:47 PM PST by Jim Robinson

It is apparent that CBS News producer Mary Mapes hasn't learned anything after being fired for using forged documents to smear President Bush. She calls White House official Karl Rove the "mastermind" of the attacks on her story but admits to the Washington Post that she has no proof of that. The Mapes performance, which is designed to sell her new book, can only diminish the reputation of journalism even more. Have we reached a point in journalism where the facts and evidence simply don't matter?

Her bizarre performance continued on CNN's Larry King Live, where she was asked if the Bush administration put pressure on CBS to retract or "suppress" the story. "I don't know. I have no evidence that they put direct pressure on," she said. But she went on to complain about the "thousands of e-mails from conservative bloggers," as if the White House had been behind them. So was this "indirect pressure" from the Bush Administration? That was the implication from Mapes—again without any proof.

This is reminiscent of former Democratic Vice President Al Gore's recent speech in which he falsely claimed that Dan Rather was "forced out of his anchor job after angering the White House…"

What we are seeing here is an attempt to rewrite history, to obscure the fact that CBS tried to subvert the President during the heat of a campaign using phony documents. The Mapes version is that the story was true and that CBS retracted under pressure from the White House or CBS parent Viacom. The only problem with the Mapes version is that there is absolutely no proof that it is true.

"On another thread, I saw another freeper opine that she is hawking this book because she believes she'll never work again."

Actually, I understand Mapes has been offered a job as Receptionist for the Clinton Double-Wide Presidential Library & Massage Parlor...

. . . I was amazed at how sure she is that this story is true . . .
<<

Thing is, even if it WERE true, did it rate FIVE years of continuous "research"? A top Clinton figure STEALS CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS from the national archives and CBS didn't put FIVE MINUTES into that REAL story.

I thought she looked stoned..and every stone hit her face.

They just keep following Hitler's creed (paraphrase) "Just keep telling the lie until it becomes the truth"

On the other hand, it did find that Mapes knew that, contrary to her report, George W. Bush offered to go to Vietnam while in the National Guard unit. This was a critical fact, undermining the entire premise of the CBS News story that Bush went into the National Guard to avoid Vietnam.

She was on O'Reilly tonight, still insinuating that George Bush joined the TANG to avoid Vietnam and saying straight out that he got "preferential treatment."

I doubt she's aware of this obvious non sequitur.

She made a huge ass of herself on O'reilly, although he didn't have the guts to call her a lying RAT hack.

This is strange. It reads like CBS has some decent standards. How is that possible?

"Mary Mapes' actions damaged CBS News as an organizational and brought pain to many colleagues with whom she worked. Her disregard for journalistic standards -- and for her colleagues -- comes through loud and clear in her interviews and in the book that attempts to rewrite the history of this complex and sad affair.

As always, revisionist history must be tested against the facts. Not only are those facts contained in the extensive media coverage that took place at the time, but also in the 200-plus-page report of the independent panel which investigated the matter for more than three months.

We believe those facts speak for themselves. The idea that a news organization would not need to authenticate such important source material is only one of the troubling and erroneous statement in her account."

CBS may have found some standards because the economic hits it has taken due Blather/Mapes Gate.

A female relative watch Mapes from the morning or her appearance on GMA to her last tv exposure. This relative is in health care and has medical training. She couldn't believe how Mapes was behaving like she hadn't done anything wrong. This relative said CBS had to take a positive stand or lose its credibility forever.

One would've hoped that Pravda had folded when the Soviet Union disintegrated, but its American affiliate, CBS, lives on.

That is a great one -

"potlatch" made that golden "Mapescar" one up

She also made a "MapesBat" .gif up

I wonder how much money the RNC is having to pay Mapes, Rather, Sheehan, and Dean to go looney on cable every day now.

It's such a gift......
