Gov. Bill Richardson spoke at a news conference in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, hours after rumors surfaced that he died in a Virginia plane crash.
A plane did crash near Leesburg, Va., on Wednesday morning, killing the two people on board.
Rumors quickly surfaced that Richardson was one of those two. Television stations along the East Coast joined television networks in trying to confirm the rumors, calling the governors office which answered 20 calls in an hour.
We had to convince them seriously that hes fine, said Richardson spokesperson Pahl Shipley, who said he told them, We just got off the phone with him, hes not even in the area where the plane crash happened.
According to the governors office, a Virginia state trooper told the FBI about the crash. The bureau then notified the National Transportation Safety Board. The board then circulated an internal memo saying, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardsons aircraft has crashed near Leesburg, Virginia. Information to date: Two fatalities, names unknown.
Richardsons office says it wasnt his plane that crashed.
The first Virginia state trooper on the scene told Eyewitness News 4 that he never reported to anyone that the plane was the New Mexico governors, saying he didnt even know who Richardson is.
Virginia authorities say they dont know how the rumor started.
Richardson is returning to New Mexico.
Plane belonged to flight school WRC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C., reports that the single-engine plane belonged to a flight school.
A student and an instructor were on board. Both were killed.
WRC reports that this is the first time in the schools history that a student or instructor has been injured or killed.
The plane crashed near a runway. Its not clear whether the plane was taking off or landing.
Wonder what else he didn't do that didn't kill him?
I can't relate to anything similar in my life, except I was once "disarmed" by the cops when I wasn't armed.
And NM wonders why the rest of the nation looks to us for comic relief.
Ping.
Oddly Enough!
Hillary must be fuming.
Gee...that's too bad.
A call for one of your "WTFIIWNM" graphics ping.
Failed Arkancide?
She'll just have to try again. And next time -- no slip-ups!!
Well, I wanted to say something like that, but my last 24-hour timeout for saying something similar was painful.
Richardson's getting a lot of good press lately (some related to book release). I wouldn't be surprised if his own staff was involved in the rumor in order to keep his name in the news.
Once, I didn't fall off of a horse I wasn't riding.
Must have been written by Yogi Berra.
I wasn't in that plane either, but nobody called me.
I meant the crash. LOL
Ding! We have a winner.
The most dangerous place in America is between Bill Richardson and a television camera / microphone.
And this alone is newsworthy. Gimme a break. Now the bent one won't be able to cry on command at a funeral, a la Ron Brown.
I know at least twenty people who weren't on that plane. None of them were mentioned in the article either!
Headline good that is.
